Weekly news! 9.5.25

What a fantastic week we have had!

Recycled materials needed!

If you have any recycled materials we could use for our art this term, please could you give them to the Year 1 teachers. We would be grateful for any donations.

Shoe boxes

If you have any spare shoe boxes you no longer need, please could Year 1 have them for their Design Technology project.

Year 1 class assembly

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will be moving the year 1 class assembly from Thursday 15th May to Wednesday 2nd July at 2.50. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Maths

This week in maths, we have been learning about money! At the start of the week looked at recognising the value of different coins and notes. We had a word bank with pictures of the coins on to help us identify the coins. We also played a game with our partners of ‘guess the coin’. Partner A had to choose a coin or note and describe it to partner B, who had to guess which coin it was. We used descriptive language like “My coin is round and silver. It is the smallest coin in my purse.”

On Wednesday we practiced using our 100 squares to help us add coin values together. First, we selected a few coins, then we worked out with our partner what the coins were and then wrote the values down on our whiteboards. We used our 100 squares to add the values together by counting on. As a challenge, we had to add 4 or more coins together.

Later in the week, we looked at exchanging a coin for different coins of the same value. Partner A’s job was to pick up a coin. Partner B then exchanged the coin for multiple coins of the same value. Partner A had to find a different way to exchange the coin for the same value.

For example:

Mrs Howard picks up a 20p.

Miss Hall exhanges it for a 10p and a 10p.

Mrs Howard exchanges it for a 5p, 5p 5p and 5p.

Miss Hall exchanges it for a 2p, 2p, 2p 2p, 2p 2p, 2p 2p 2p 2p

Mrs Howard exchanges it for a 10p, 5p and a 5p.

Mrs Howard exchanges that for a 10p, a 5p and a 5p

Next week in maths we will be looking at partitioning numbers into tens and ones using base 10 and place values charts and finding the inverse.

Fact of the week

Our fact of the week this week is:

9+0=9

0+9=9

9-0=9

Read, Write Inc.

This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been reviewing sounds we know and learning new sounds. We have continued to use our sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.

Reading

Mondays – RWI books to be changed by an adult. Please could ALL reading wallets be put in the trays so that we can check who has earned a certificate.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – children can change their learning zone book (the one with the coloured sticker on). Please help them to have this book ready to change when they come in to the classroom in the mornings. Thank you!

Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves (on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)- first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.

Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!

There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.

If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Thematic

This week we continued our thematic unit, Toy Maker! We explored the toys which our grandparents, or people of a similar age, played with when they were our age. We looked at photos of these toys, played with some of them and found out about them in books. We learned what the toys were used for and compared them to the toys which we play with nowadays. It was so much fun exploring these toys from the past thank you for all your pictures!

Next week we will be looking at designing and making our very own vehicles!

Love to Learn

For this weeks Love to Learn we would like you to create your very own story map of your favourite book!

Here are some examples of We Are Going on a Bear Hunt.

Other news

PE is on a Tuesday afternoon. Children need to wear a plain white t-shirt, black or navy bottoms and a plain black or blue sweatshirt.

Next tern our Read at 3 will continue every Friday at 3pm this is where we would love to invite you into our classrooms and read with your child for 15 minutes

Show and Tell

A reminder that children should not be bringing any toys into school as these can get easily broken or lost. If children would like to do show and tell, please email a picture of the show and tell to class teacher(s) and we can use this when the children share with the class. Please could all parents ensure that children are not bringing toys etc in from home.

Do you have any of the following….?

We are so excited to be getting out in the Year One garden more now that the sun has come out. We have been busy during Power Play, planting lots of summer flowering bulbs, fertilising the soil with coffee grounds and egg shells and watering the flower bed. The children have been asking so many great questions and they have enjoyed talking about times when they have planted seeds or bulbs at home. They're really looking forward to seeing the flowers start to grow.

We would love to add more plants to outdoor area. If you have any of the following spare at home, we would be so grateful for donations:

Plants (outdoor/indoor)

Cuttings of plants

Plant pots of all sizes

Seed sowing trays

Seeds/bulbs

Watering cans
