One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News

The children have worked really hard this week!  As we come towards the end of term 1, they have really impressed class teachers on their attitude and manner.

In Maths, we have been learning about addition and subtraction, using our knowledge to solve problems.  They have discussed their methods and considered effective ways to work out calculations.

In English, we have been reading more of Floodland.  The story is really developing and the children have thought of lots of questions that they would like to ask the characters.  They hotseated different characters and used that to show characterisation.  They have been applying their knowledge of conjunctions to formulate a range of sentences.

In Topic, we tested, evaluated and made improvements to our seed dispersal units that we made last week.  This was a holistic method: we kept testing then changing until the seeds dispersed perfectly!

'The month of October offers some very obvious reading inspiration! Autumn is in full swing and Halloween summons readers of all types to pick up books that lean toward the spooky side! For this half terms reading challenge, we would love you to pick a challenge from the list. We ask parents to keep a record in the books of which challenge the children have completed. All pupils who manage the challenge will have their name entered into a draw. We will pull out the winner the first Friday after half term during assembly. The winner will receive a book of their choice from the scholastic website!

The challenges are:

  • Read a book that features a character who wears a fun costume or disguise.
  • Read a book about a character who is the same age as you.
  • Read a book that is set in autumn.
  • Read a book that has a Halloween theme.
  • Read a book with no pictures and use your imagination to draw a picture of the main character.

We look forward to hearing all about your spooky reading choices!'

As Love to Learn this week, we would like you to find a book and read it to / with your sibling.  If you don't have a brother or sister, you can choose to read with another member of your family.  Make sure you get your reading record signed and bring it in next week!
