Year 5 have had a great end to the term!

Year 5 children are expected to read for at least 10 minutes every day and hand in their reading record daily. Please sign their record and encourage them to read a range of genres. There are banded books in school in addition to the books in the school’s library and the class book corner (including those in the ‘Classics Challenge’)

The children return to school on Tuesday 25th February.  The children are invited to come to school on this day dressed in their sports clothing.  The children will be taking part in sporting activities throughout the day!

Learning this week:

English – The children have worked incredibly hard this week to plan and write their own newspaper based on Odysseus’ final fight! They are confident writing their introduction that is short, sharp and containing the 5Ws. Ask your child to explain what the 5Ws are! We then included reported and directed speech. The children finished this week publishing their own newspaper for our school displays.

Maths – The children have learnt how to convert improper fractions into mixed numbers, convert a mixed number into an improper fraction and they have multiplied fractions by whole numbers.

Topic – As part of our Chilton school values, year 5 took part in a number of Online Safety activities.  We have discussed how to stay safe online and when using social media. The children have learnt about oversharing and how images online are sometimes not a true representation.  The children also understand what their digital footprint is and how to use online tools appropriately. As our exit point, year 5 have created an online video covering these topics.  This will be uploaded to our Year 5 blog as soon as possible.

Home Learning:

We will be starting a new topic in Term 4.  In preparation for this new topic, we would like the children to research ONE of the following famous scientists. The children can present their home learning in any way.

  • Antoine Lavoisier

  • Dmitri Mendeleyev

  • Sir Humphry Davy

  • John Dalton

  • Marie Curie

All children must continue to log on and play TTRS at least three times a week and read every night for 10 mins.

There is no right or wrong way to complete a Love to Learn task! Please be as imaginative or as creative as you would like! Love to Learn tasks should be returned on the Wednesday following them being set. Whilst books may not be formally marked, in class we will spend time looking at and enjoying what everyone has learned at home and rewards and house points will be given!
