One Childhood, One Chance

Monday 20th April Home Learning

Good morning Year 3! Did you have a nice weekend? We hope you did and are ready to get on with some great learning this week.

English

Reading – Read the informational text about Trolls attached below and clarify the words in the table below it. These include words like: bulbous, warty and raw. Make sure you use a dictionary or an online dictionary and write down the definition of the word. There may be two or more definitions, so you will have to make sure the meaning of the word makes sense in the text you have read.

Writing – You will be creating your own informational text about Trolls this week. Today you will be starting with the opening paragraph, also known as the introduction. The introduction does not need to be long, maybe only two or three sentences. The job of the introduction is to explain what the text is about and to get the reader interested and want to read more.

In the introduction, the writer is trying to get the reader to read more by telling them that trolls are not as bad as they have been led to believe. They do not give any information away yet, which makes there reader want to continue reading the text. They use a sentence opener (However) to make it clear that this is not true and makes the sentence more interesting.

In your writing today, you will need to include: The title of your informational text, the sub heading introduction, a brief paragraph that will explain what the text is about and to persuade the reader to read on. You will also need to include at least one sentence opener in your writing. Attached is a sentence opener sheet that will help you.

Challenge

To vary your sentence types, include a question and a command in your writing. For example:

Do you think you know everything about Trolls? Think again. Trolls aren’t just the giant, slobbering monsters that you see in fairy tales. If you want to know what trolls are really like then you need to read this now.

Maths

In maths this week we will be learning some more about place value, partitioning and estimating numbers.

Partitioning is splitting numbers up into their parts, for example,

382 is 300 and 80 and 2 or 3 hundreds, 8 tens and 2 ones.

We can show numbers that have been partitioned with base ten blocks (also called diennes). Like this:

This shows the number 260:

Today you will try to complete some worksheets using the knowledge you already have about numbers and place value.

Choose a sheet that best suits your level from below.

Topic

Last week, you learnt about the names of the parts of flowering plants. Today you will learn what the function of each part of the plant is. The function of something is a posh word for the job that something does. We will learn what the stem, roots, flower and leaves of a plant do.

Watch these two videos. You may like to make notes while you watch them so that you can remember what the stem, roots, leaves and flower do.

Now we'd like you to draw a plant, label the stem, leaves, flower and roots, and next to each label explain the function of each part in a small paragraph.

There is also a matching up challenge attached below.

FUN EXPERIMENT OPPORTUNITY

As you have found out today, the stem carries water around the plant. If you would like to investigate how the plant uses water, there is a simple investigation that you can do at home. Put some food colouring (quite a bit) into the water that you give to some plants. This works well with white carnations, celery or white roses. Leave the plants for a few days to see what happens! Where does the water go in the plants? Send us your photos if you have a go at this challenge.
