We have been making phone calls to you over the past few days to see how everyone is doing and to see if you have any questions. It has been so lovely to speak with you and find out what you have been up to. We will continue to try and contact everyone over the rest of this week.

English

At 10.30am today on the link below a lovely Read, Write Inc teacher will be adding a video to teach you all the sound oa. There will be two videos called 'Set 3 speed sounds - oa and Set 3 spelling oa'. If you would like to, please watch the video for your phonics session by clicking on the link:

If the videos do not work for you, the lesson is detailed below:

1.    Find the sound oa on your sound card and say it lots of times, make sure you are looking at the sound to ensure you remember what it looks like, also say ‘oa – goat in a boat’. When you're finished, point to some other sounds too (about 10).

2.    Write down the following words for your child to read (goat, boat, float, soak, cloak). Remember they need to find the special friends, fred talk (say the sounds) and then read the word.

3.    Now write down some words for your child to read as a recap of previous sounds learnt (yawn, frown, clay, home, seen). This time encourage your child to say the sounds in their head and then say the word aloud.

4.    Ask your child to show you their alien faces! Write down the words choag, floap, shoak, ploaf. Ask your child to spot the special friends, Fred talk and then read the word.

5.    Now it's time for spellings! One at a time say the following words to your child (goat, boat, float, soak, cloak). Repeat the word back to each other then ask them to pinch the sounds. When they know how many sounds in the word they can write it down. Help your child to tick or fix (correct) their work. 

It is also important for children to practise reading red words which cannot be Fred talked. These words need to be learnt by sight but can be done so through a variety of fun games. You could write some of the red words down on pieces of paper and play snap, bingo, put them around the room/ garden for children to run to when called out or children could practise writing them out in chalk, paint, sand etc. Knowing these red words will help children become speedier and more confident when reading.

As a writing challenge you could ask your child to write a story about a person or an animal getting stuck in the mud!

Maths

As a warm up today take turns to choose a number but keep it secret! Give clues about the number (e.g. it is more than 10 and is an odd number).

Today in maths we will be thinking about the properties of 3D shapes. Listen to the 3D shape song again and pause at different points to ask your child questions about the shapes and what objects are made from these shapes.

Collect objects from around your house which are different 3D shapes. Look at the faces (these are the flat parts of the shape) and describe them e.g.

A cube has 6 square faces

A cone has one circle face and one curved face

A cylinder has 2 circle faces and 1 curved face

Now build different things with the objects (e.g. a tower). Discuss which shapes are best to build with. Discuss why a sphere might not be the best shape to build a tower with, which way a cylinder would need to be to build a tower etc.

Topic

Today we will be starting our RE unit. In this unit, we will be learning about Hinduism and the celebrations that Hindus celebrate. Today, we will be learning about Hinduism. Look through the RE slides together. On the RE activity document, there are different activities- have a look through and choose one of the activities to complete (you can do more if you wish!)

Helping at Home!

The next time a grown up at home does some washing, help them to fold the washing and put it away! This would be a great help to your adults at home!
