Home Learning - 22.4.20

Wednesday 22nd April 2020

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Phonics

Each day of school closure, the Ruth Miskin team will be uploading a Set 1, Set 2 and Set 3 Speed Sounds lesson video to Youtube. We will be following the Set 1 videos. These will be sounds that your child has learned in class already. You will be recapping these sounds at home which will hopefully give your child a sense of confidence.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

Today (22.4.20) the video will be focusing on the sound ‘u’.

After practising writing the sound in your book, please then recap writing the sounds ‘k’ and ‘p’ just as we did last term.

Now can you try writing these three words?

‘up’ ‘cup’ ‘tub’

Writing task

This week we have read the story about 'Mavis the Magical Cat'. So far we have learnt about Mavis and other characters in the story. Yesterday, we had to match the words with the pictures. Miss Dudley-Smith really enjoyed doing this with her niece Ivy, who she FaceTimed to help her. She was fantastic at using her phonic knowledge to read some of the trickier words. I hope you all had a good go at it too because today we are moving to the next page in the booklet.

Now it is time to get yourself acting. You are going to pretend to be the characters from the story. Your adult will read the story to you. As the story is being read, you need to listen carefully and decide what the characters might be doing. You could focus on Mavis first, then Marigold the Witch! We would love to see some photos of you on our Padlet.

Please find the story attached below.

Challenge

Let’s pretend our pencil is our wand, we are going to be magical like Marigold and Mavis. Can you write three spells? What spell would you use if you were Marigol. I’ve got one for you:

This is a spell to make the slugs go away…

Slugs on my green, shall never be seen!

Now it’s your turn.

Maths

We have been challenging ourselves with addition this week. Now it is time to practise writing your addition sentences. Today we are going to be using this link to roll the dice and write down two numbers to add together. https://www.google.com/search?q=roll+the+dice&rlz=1C1GCEA_enGB763GB763&oq=roll+the+dice&aqs=chrome..69i57j0j46j0l5.2619j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

If you have a dice at home you can use that instead!

Roll the dice and write the number in your book. Roll it again and write the next number in your book. Make sure you write your symbols. It should look something like this:

3 + 4 = 7

Then see if you can work out the sum of the numbers. Remember you can draw dots or use counters to help you. Your task is to do 7 number sentences.

Challenge

Using the link to the online dice, change the settings to increase the numbers on the dice. Can you challenge yourself to add numbers up to 10 or 15?

Topic

We hope you enjoyed using your bodies to show how a beanstalk may grow, and if you managed to make or draw a beanstalk- well done.

Today we have attached a PowerPoint that will teach you all about how and where fruit and vegetables grow.  Read through it together and discuss. Have you seen any of these growing before? Where?

Challenge

Write down the vegetables and fruit you have eaten this week and where you think they came from. Here are some of ours:

Potatoes - the ground

Cherries - a tree

Carrots - the ground

We would love to see pictures of your work too. You can post on Padlet below or email work to us. If you are having trouble accessing Padlet please send us an email and we can help you.
