At 10.30am today on the link below a lovely Read, Write Inc teacher will be adding a video to teach you all the sound u-e (we call these ‘chatty friends’). If the videos do not work for you then the lesson is detailed below:
1, Find the sound ‘u-e’ on your sound card and say it lots of times, make sure you are looking at the sound to ensure you remember what it looks like, also say ‘u-e huge brute’. Explain that the u-e are chatty friends (they talk too much so are not allowed to sit next to each other and have to have someone sit in between them!) When you're finished, point to some other sounds too (about 10).
2. Write down the following words for your child to read (cute, brute, flute). Remember they need to find the chatty friends, Fred talk (say the sounds) and then read the word.
3. Now write down some words for your child to read as a recap of previous sounds learnt (sleep, sheep, clear, clown, draw). This time encourage your child to say the sounds in their head and then say the word aloud.
4. Ask your child to show you their alien faces! Write down the words shume, chuge, pluje. Ask your child to spot the chatty/special friends, Fred talk and then read the word.
5. Now it's time for spellings! One at a time say the following words to your child (cute, brute, flute). Repeat the word back to each other then ask them to pinch the sounds. When they know how many sounds in the word they can write it down. Help your child to tick or fix (correct) their work.
It is also important for children to practise reading red words which cannot be Fred talked. These words need to be learnt by sight but can be done so through a variety of fun games. You could write some of the red words down on pieces of paper and play snap, bingo, put them around the room/ garden for children to run to when called out or children could practise writing them out in chalk, paint, sand etc. Knowing these red words will help children become speedier and more confident when reading.
You can now share a book together. Use the link below to find the book ‘A Bad Mood’ (feel free to select a different book to read if your child wishes to read another).
Discuss with your child the different feelings they experience and when they feel this way (we have done lots of work on this at school!) As a writing challenge you could ask your child to write down what makes them happy, sad, nervous, excited etc.
Maths
As a warm up today, we will be focusing on number bonds to 10. Click on the link below, click on the addition part of the train and then click on Bonds to Make 10.

Look at the coins on the attached sheet and quickly go through what each coin is worth. Today we will be learning to exchange money (i.e. swapping ten 1p coins for a 10p coin).
If possible, use real coins to complete the activity (if not, you could print off the coins and cut them out). Count out two 1p coins and ask your child what coin has the same value as the two 1p coins (a 2p coin). Repeat with five 1p coins and exchange for a 5p coin. Then do with ten 1p coins and exchange for a 10p coin.
If your child needs to continue working on this skill then that is fine. If they could be challenged further, you could try some of the following:
Get two 10p coins (exchange for a 20p coin)
Get two 5p coins (exchange for a 10p coin)
Get five 10p coins (exchange for a 50p coin)
Get four 5p coins (exchange for a 20p coin)
Get five 2p coins (exchange for a 10p coin)
Get ten 2p coins (exchange for a 20p coin)
Get ten 10p coins and a £1 coin. Say that you think the pile of 10p coins is worth the most because there are more coins in that pile. Discuss what there is in each pile and the value of the coins. Discuss how 100p and £1 are the same amount.
