English
At 10.30am today on the link below a lovely Read, Write Inc teacher will be adding a video to teach you all the sound ai (we call these ‘special friends’). There will be two videos called: Set 3 speed sounds ai and Set 3 spelling ai. If you would like to, please watch the video for your phonics session by clicking on the link:

If the videos do not work for you then the lesson is detailed below:
1, Find the sound ‘ai’ on your sound card and say it lots of times, make sure you are looking at the sound to ensure you remember what it looks like, also say ‘ai – snail in the rain’. Explain that the ai are special friends. When you're finished, point to some other sounds too (about 10).
2. Write down the following words for your child to read (plain, rain, main, paint, waist). Remember they need to find the special friends, Fred talk (say the sounds) and then read the word.
3. Now write down some words for your child to read as a recap of previous sounds learnt (creep, dear, frown, blow, hear). This time encourage your child to say the sounds in their head and then say the word aloud.
4. Ask your child to show you their alien faces! Write down the words flaip, maib, shaiz. Ask your child to spot the chatty/special friends, Fred talk and then read the word.
5. Now it's time for spellings! One at a time say the following words to your child (plain, rain, main, paint, waist). Repeat the word back to each other then ask them to pinch the sounds. When they know how many sounds in the word they can write it down. Help your child to tick or fix (correct) their work.
It is also important for children to practise reading red words which cannot be Fred talked. These words need to be learnt by sight but can be done so through a variety of fun games. You could write some of the red words down on pieces of paper and play snap, bingo, put them around the room/ garden for children to run to when called out or children could practise writing them out in chalk, paint, sand etc. Knowing these red words will help children become speedier and more confident when reading.
You can now share a book together. Use the link below to find the book ‘High on a Hill’ (feel free to select a different book to read if your child wishes to read another).
Imagine that you are standing on top of a hill. What can you see? What can you hear and smell? You could draw a picture of the view and label it using some fabulous describing words or you could write a short paragraph in sentences to describe the view from the top of the hill.
Finally, for English today… Day three of the writing challenge and we have a video bonanza for you! Not one, but TWO videos! And starring the famous Mr McAuley himself! However, these are not for the faint-hearted. Mr McAuley has to delve into one of his phobias and defend his property from attack!
I hope you enjoy the videos along with the poems and as ever, I hope that Martyn Harvey's poems inspire you to search for living things around you and consider what their lives could possibly be like.

Maths
As a warm up today, we will be focusing on 1 less. Click on the link below, select subtraction and click on 1 less (up to 10 – one less and then move on to up to 20 – one less if confident).

Today, we will be continuing with finding fact families. See if you can remember what the rules are from yesterday (When adding, the biggest number will always be the answer. When subtracting, you will always need to start with the biggest number). For example:
5 + 2 = 7
2 + 5 = 7
7 – 5 = 2
7 – 2 = 5
Roll two dice. What numbers did you roll? Try putting these in to a fact family e.g. if you rolled 6 and 5:
6 + 5 = 11
5 + 6 = 11
11 – 6 = 5
11 – 5 = 6
Now try finding the fact families for the following sets of numbers:

Today, we will be exploring different materials. Use the link below or the attached document at the bottom of the page to view a PowerPoint about materials.

Pause at different points and ask your child questions about the different materials. Ask your child why they think windows are made from glass, why tables are made from wood etc.
Go on a material/object hunt around your house. Find different objects and write what material it is made from. You can present this in any way (e.g. take photos, in a table, drawing pictures of the objects and labelling what it is made from, using the attached sheet). Start to talk about why objects are made from particular materials (e.g. windows are made from glass as they are see through or transparent, tables are made from wood because wood is strong etc).
