At 10.30am today on the link below a lovely Read, Write Inc teacher will be adding a video to teach you all the sound ire (we call these ‘special friends’). If the videos do not work for you then the lesson is detailed below:
1, Find the sound ‘ire’ on your sound card and say it lots of times, make sure you are looking at the sound to ensure you remember what it looks like, also say ‘ire – fire fire!’. Explain that the ire are special friends. When you're finished, point to some other sounds too (about 10).
2. Write down the following words for your child to read (fire, wire, hire, tired). Remember they need to find the special friends, Fred talk (say the sounds) and then read the word.
3. Now write down some words for your child to read as a recap of previous sounds learnt (sheep, fear, clown, deep, rain). This time encourage your child to say the sounds in their head and then say the word aloud.
4. Ask your child to show you their alien faces! Write down the words chire, piret, nireg. Ask your child to spot the chatty/special friends, Fred talk and then read the word.
5. Now it's time for spellings! One at a time say the following words to your child (fire, wire, hire, tired). Repeat the word back to each other then ask them to pinch the sounds. When they know how many sounds in the word they can write it down. Help your child to tick or fix (correct) their work.
It is also important for children to practise reading red words which cannot be Fred talked. These words need to be learnt by sight but can be done so through a variety of fun games. You could write some of the red words down on pieces of paper and play snap, bingo, put them around the room/ garden for children to run to when called out or children could practise writing them out in chalk, paint, sand etc. Knowing these red words will help children become speedier and more confident when reading.
Today there is a reading comprehension task to complete (see attached). It is all about beach habitats. There are 3 different tasks varying in challenge (1 star, 2 stars, 3 stars). Select the challenge you feel is best for your child (you only need to do one!) If you would rather read a book, you could always select one from the link below:
For the writing task today, imagine you are an animal who lives on the beach. You could describe what it is like to live on the beach. What can you see, hear and smell in your habitat?
Writing Competition
This was posted on the blog yesterday, but just in case you missed it:
Mr McAuley and Martyn Harvey have really enjoyed making these videos for the writing competition, we really hope that you have enjoyed watching them. In this final video, Martyn and I are announcing the competition and what we are looking for in a winning poem. Remember, "a master has failed more times than an amateur has tried", so get exploring, write some poetry, do some drawings and then maybe find another creature and go through the same process again. We would love for you to enjoy this writing and illustrating process because we think that will shine through in your poems.
A poster will appear on your blogs to confirm the writing competition and where to send your entries.
Finally, remember to go back and 'like' your favourite two videos, you can even leave a positive message under the it along with your name so we know who has enjoyed that video and why.

Select the level your child will feel most comfortable with.
Yesterday, you were learning to fill in missing numbers in addition and subtraction calculations. We will continue with this today, but the missing number will be in a different place.
? + 14 = 20 For calculations like these, discuss how you can add in any order, so we can still find 14 on your numberline or hundred square and then count how many jumps you need to make to get 20 (6 jumps, so the missing number is 6).
? – 6 = 10 For calculations like these, circle the number 10 as that is the answer. Explain that to get to 10 we would have had to jump back 6 spaces, so where would we have needed to start (on the 16).
You can then try the calculations on the attached sheet (select the level of challenge your child feels comfortable with – they only need to do one of the levels –not all of them!)
Topic
Tuesday is Music day! We would like you to make music with objects from around your house and investigate the different sounds that are made. You will need:
Saucepans of different sizes, a wooden spoon, a metal spoon and a plastic spoon.
First of all, use the wooden spoon and hit each of the different saucepans. How would you describe the sounds which are made each time? Now repeat with the other spoons. Which creates the highest sound? Which creates the lowest sound?
You could try using different objects now!
