One Childhood, One Chance

Characterisation!

To understand the characters in Floodland, we unpicked the vocabulary from the text to identify what each character is like and how the author portrays them.

Direct characterisation is when the author directly describes the character (he was scrawny and tall) however indirect characterisation - also known as inference - makes the reader work out what the character is like (she rolled her eyes and sighed when she heard the news).  We wrote on large sheets of paper on the tables, sprawling across to write down everything we knew about each character to help with our writing.
