One Childhood, One Chance

Thursday 18th June Learning

Good morning. I hope you enjoyed making your Aztec art yesterday!

Today we have a couple of websites that you might be interested at looking at:

Firstly, we have a link to help families build resilience during all the change that is going on. Whether it is going back to school after such a long time away, missing friends or managing a range of emotions that you may be feeling, this website will give you tactics, plans and advice on coping and building resilience. https://www.mentallyhealthyschools.org.uk/media/2047/coronavirus-toolkit-6-resilience.pdf

The next link is to an online assembly that the Duchess of Cambridge will be presenting at 11am today. The theme is 'spreading kindness' and we would love everyone to watch and discuss together. https://classroom.thenational.academy/assemblies/

Let's get going on today's learning...

English

Reading: Let's carry on with some more of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Read the pages below.

In today’s part of the story, Charlie asked his Grandparents lots of questions. Write down 3 questions that Charlie asks. Now think of 3 more questions that YOU would ask if you were Charlie to ask the Grandparents. Don’t forget question marks.

Writing:

So far this week you have been learning to write compound sentences. Today we will be writing some complex sentences. Remember that we use I SAW A WABUB conjunctions to make complex sentences, such as if, while, when, as.

A subordinating conjunction can go in the middle or at the start of a sentence like this:

If Charlie could have something tasty for dinner, he would be the happiest child alive!

Charlie would be the happiest child alive, if he could have something tasty for dinner!

A complex sentence also needs to have a comma in it to separate the main and subordinate clause. Reading the sentence and thinking about where you would take a small pause, will help you work out where the comma goes.

Open the CCF complex sentences sheet and complete the sentences to make complex sentences. Then see if you can put the comma in the correct place in the last few complex sentences.

Maths

For maths today, we are going to do some more addition. This time we are going to find the value of items and add them together. There will be a list of prices for each item and then a list of items, you will need to find out how much each item costs and then add them all together.

The worksheets attached are differentiated, so please start at the level you think best suits your ability.

Topic

Today we will find out where chocolate comes from! We will also work on our geography skills with some map work. We have already found out that chocolate grows on trees. The trees are called cacao trees. The cocoa beans grow inside cocoa pods. Take a look at the picture below:

Do you know where in the world cacao trees grow? They grow in hot and wet countries that are near the equator. About 70% of the world’s chocolate is grown in West Africa. Some of the countries that grow cocoa beans are:

  • Ecuador, Venezuela and Brazil in South America
  • Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon in Africa
  • Malaysia and Indonesia in Asia

You can see the countries that grow cocoa beans shaded dark brown on this map. You can see that they are all close to the equator (the imaginary line that goes around the middle of the globe).

If you have an atlas at home, see if you can find these countries in your atlas. If not, open the world map attached below and find the countries.

Now open the blank world map and see if you can find the countries, colour them in and label them with the countries name. (If this is too tricky I have also attached a blank map with the country names on it to help you).

EXTRA CHALLENGE: Can you also label the 7 continents of the world and draw the equator on your map? Can you label the oceans on your map?

Here is a very interesting video for you to watch about where chocolate comes from: https://www.sciencekids.co.nz/videos/chemistry/chocolate.html

Spelling

For spelling today you have a crossword to complete to practice the spelling of some of the Year 3/4 common exception words (tricky words).
