One Childhood, One Chance

Monday 22nd June 2020

Good morning team Periwinkle and team Teal! We have completed our first week back with the return of some year 1s. It has been lovely to see some of you back, and those who haven’t returned, it has been lovely to speak to you on the phone. We still have a few more calls to make but if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

SHOUTOUTS

Emilie-Grace spent a long time preparing a poster about germs on the laptop and we think it is fab! Well done to you.

Here’s today’s learning:

RWI

The RWI videos will be available, but will take a slightly different form. All videos will be available from 9:30 am so you can choose from set 2 or set 3, whichever you feel your child needs to focus on. There will be reading opportunities for longer words and red words included in each session. Use the link below to find the lessons you need under the different categories. On the channel from Monday you will also find a Hold a Sentence video to watch to help your child get used to remembering sentences which they wish to write down. Just scroll down as you would when selecting your sounds video and it is after the red words videos.

You tube: Read, Write inc phonics video

If you would rather not use the videos, teach the lesson as follows:

1.   Find the sound ‘ear’ on your sound card and say it lots of times, make sure you are looking at the sound to ensure you remember what it looks like, also say ‘ear- hear with your ear.’  When you're finished, point to some other sounds too (about 10). Explain to your child that this sound can be tricky as it has 3 letters which make 1 sound, and it is also a word.

2.    Write down the following words for your child to read (fear, clear, beard, spear, year). Remember they need to find the special friends, Fred talk (say the sounds) and then read the word.

3.    Now write down some words for your child to read as a recap of previous sounds learnt (claw, bake, cloud, stay, smile). This time encourage your child to say the sounds in their head and then say the word aloud.

4.    Ask your child to show you their alien faces! Write down the words blear, slear, beart, mearg. Ask your child to spot the special friends, Fred talk and then read the word.

5.    Now it's time for spellings! One at a time say the following words to your read (fear, clear, beard, spear, year). Repeat the word back to each other then ask them to pinch the sounds. When they know how many sounds in the word they can write it down. Help your child to tick or fix (correct) their work.

English

Today we would like your child to choose their favourite story, read the story together and discuss what is happening, who the characters are and what they enjoy about the book. Attached is a book review for your child to complete for their favourite book.

Maths

To warm up our maths brains today, we are going to continue to count in 2s. You can play games like tables tennis or sing the song on the following link.

This week in maths we will be focussing on addition and subtraction. Today we will start with addition, use the teaching slides attached to discuss the vocabulary and how to use a number line/ hundred square to add then your child can have a practice at adding. Today’s lesson is practical so that they get a feel for addition and are free to make mistakes and correct themselves. Add a 1 digit number to a 2 digit number (teen numbers if your child is not confident with bigger numbers- you can always make them bigger when they are more secure). If your child is using bigger numbers they will need to use a hundred square rather than their number line. Try to make sure that the 1 digit number does not go over the next 10 for example:

12 + 7 = 19 (the answer has not gone into the next ten).

On the teaching slides there is a challenge if your child is ready. When your child is finished discuss with them what they have learnt about addition.

Topic

This week’s focus will be on friendships. Discuss the word ‘friend’. What does it mean to you? Who are your friends? WHY are they your friends (try to draw out the qualities that the people have that make them good friends e.g. kind, caring, loyal, trustworthy). How do you make friends – what do you need to do in order to make friends. Discuss different scenarios e.g. someone comes and asks you a question and you ignore them/are rude to them etc, is that going to help to make a new friendship?

ACTIVITY 1: children to draw themselves in the middle and then draw their friends round the outside. Add on ‘friendship’ words (caring, kind etc).

Discuss the word ‘lonely’. What does that word mean. Watch the following:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7w-dLSx7EYw

Watch it again and then pause at different points and discuss, ask questions. Have they ever felt like that?

What could you do if someone is lonely? How would that make them feel?

ACTIVITY 2: If possible, role play, 1 person to be lonely, 1 person to offer some help to make them feel not lonely.

Then talk about what was the best way to make people feel not lonely?

We hope you have a great day!
