One Childhood, One Chance

Year 4 Weekly News 11.9.20

Year 4 have had another incredible week where we have seen very motivated and engaged learners, well done!

This is what we have been learning about this week:

English

In reading this week we have begun our new text called Gregory Cool by Caroline Binch. The children have been predicting and clarifying, they have been using inference to answer questions about the text and then they enjoyed some role play taking the hot seat as one of the characters from the story.

In writing, we have focused on setting descriptions. The children have revised skills we previously learnt in Year 3; using adjectives, expanded noun phrases and verbs to describe settings from Gregory Cool.

Maths

In maths this week we have gone over number and place value. They represented numbers up to 5 digits with base ten (diennes) equipment and place value counters. We also partitioned numbers in different ways such as:

753 = 700 + 50 + 3

753 = 550 + 150 + 25 + 25 + 3

753 = 400 + 300 + 10 + 10 + 20 + 5 + 5 + 3

We then finished off the week comparing numbers using the comparison signs <, > and = and we ordered numbers.

For example,   273 = 273 < 345

24 > 18

John has ordered these numbers in ascending order:      123,    174,    ______,   199,    239.   Write down 3 possible numbers that could go in the gap.

PSHE

This week we have been learning about the 4 Chilton Values; Respect, Kindness, Courage and Equality. The children took part in some very thoughtful role play activities where they explored kindness and treating everyone equally. When learning about courage, we discussed what can stop us from being courageous - we decided on fear, uncertainty, vulnerability and embarrassment. We then thought about what we may do to get out of things that we are scared of doing e.g. make excuses, run away, get someone else to do it, and finally we thought about what we could do to overcome our fear and be brave e.g. take a deep breath, tell ourselves positive thoughts, ask someone to do it with us, think about how great we'll feel if we did it.

Here are some of the children during their role play:
