One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 9th October

Good afternoon everyone! We have had another fantastic week in year 1. We have been overwhelmed by the progress the children are making and could not be more proud of them.

Here is what we have been learning about this week:

Maths

On Monday and Tuesday we learnt about number bonds to 10. We investigated all the different ways of making 10. To do this we used our numicon. We had the piece of numicon that shows 10 and place other peices of numicon on top in order to find which numbers made a total of 10. We found so many different ways to make 10. We listened to the song below to help us try to remember all the ways to make 10.

At the end of the week we investigated all the different ways to make a given number. For example, some children had to find all the ways to make 12. To do this the children were given 12 cubes (the whole). They had to break the cubes in 2 (the 2 parts) and write down the number sentence e.g. 6 + 6 = 12. They then put the cubes back together and broke them in a different way e.g. 10 + 2 = 12. They repeated this until they had found all the different ways to make 12.

English

In English this week we continued on our Read, Write Inc journey. Most of the children are now beginning to learn their set 2 sounds. The link below shows what these sounds are:

Set 2 speed sounds

The children are reading and writing words containing these sounds, as well as reading stories daily and writing sentences about the story they have read.

In their Topic writing task this week the children wrote about some paintings we have been learning about. They wrote a sentence about what they liked and disliked about the paintings.

Topic

In Topic this week, we have been learning about the job of an Artist. We learnt about a famous artist called Turner, who liked painting pictures of Margate. We learnt about primary and secondary colours and how if you add white to any colour it will make it brighter - this is called adding tint. We also looked at 'A starry night' by Van Gogh. We compared the paintings and discussed what we liked and disliked before we had a go at painting using 'tint' and 'shade'. Our teachers were really proud of our artwork!

Next week we will be learning about subtraction and the job of being a fireman. We will be making moving fire engines from junk modelling.

Notices

If you have any spare boxes you could send in we would be really grateful. We are making our fire engines on Friday.

Please can you send in any plants or herbs you have in for our garden area. We are trying to make a sensory garden.

Please remember to ensure your child has their reading book in their book bag everyday. We love reading with the children as regularly as possible.

We hope you have a lovely weekend!
