One Childhood, One Chance

W/B 3rd May 2021

What a great four-day week Year 5 have had this week! Thank you to children and parents for the wonderful effort with the Number Day dress up too. Here's what we've been up to:

English

After finishing our unit on 'The Piano' last week, this week have started reading Alfred Noyes' famous poem, The Highwayman. Before we started reading, we discussed stealing and whether there were any circumstances were stealing was justifiable. We debated this, looking at Robin Hood in detail, before writing a balanced argument showing both views. Next week, we will be continuing to write balanced arguments but focusing this more on 'The Highwayman', particularly the Redcoats and the Highwayman himself.

Maths

This week, we have been looking at Place Value and, specifically, sequences and counting backwards and forwards in powers of ten. We discussed what powers were and how to find them. We also practised counting on and back as a class and then individually. We also enjoyed a wonderful Number Day, where our whole day's learning consisted of Number based activities. We learned about why NSPCC Number Day was important, heard about future jobs we could do in Maths and watched this year's Maths Mastermind (well done to all who competed!). Next week, our focus will be capacity and volume. We will be estimating and measuring before moving on to a range of problem-solving activities.

Afternoons

We have continued studying Sonia Boyce and, this week, we recreated our own versions of her family oriented 'She ain't holding them up, she's holding on' and 'Big women talk'. We used chalk, pastels and crayons for our own versions, involving ourselves and members of our own family, based on Sonia's work.

Home Learning - Due Friday 14th May 2021

Create a Harry Potter style potion, with a minimum of four ingredients, that will help you in your day-to-day life. Write a list of instructions/a recipe with measurements (ml/l etc.) and take some photos. Remember to give your potion a name!

If you haven't booked a Parents Consultation with your child's class teacher, please do. Invites will be with you by the end of Friday 7th May. These will be done on Teams. If you prefer a telephone appointment, please let your class teacher know.

Have a great weekend!
