One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 7th May

Woah…… we’re halfway there! That’s right, we have made it to the halfway point in this term.

Maths

This week’s maths focus has been on shape. We recapped our previous learning of 2D and 3D shape names and then moved our learning on. We had to identify 2D shapes in different positions and orientations, some shapes were also in an irregular form, meaning that they didn’t look like the shape as we know it. We had to work out a way of knowing what shape it was (by counting the sides!)

When learning about 3D shapes, we began to use vocabulary to describe their properties, including edges, vertices and faces. We worked in our learning partners to sort our 3D shapes into categories, for example shapes with flat faces or shapes with curved faces. We found that some shapes fall into both categories.

We had to practise the vocabulary lots this week to remind ourselves that 2D shapes are flat and cannot be picked up, and that they have sides and corners as we sometimes muddled them up. We will keep practising this as it can be quite tricky when learning new maths vocabulary.

Finally, we looked at repeating patterns. We were super detectives and were able to identify the part of the pattern which repeated to then be able to finish it. We had so much fun creating our own repeating patterns in a variety of different ways!

RWI

During the week of RWI, children have lots of opportunities for writing, practising holding a sentence (remembering the sentence orally before writing it down), spellings and at the end of a RWI book the children complete a write about. This is where we discuss the story and sometimes link to our own experiences. We brainstorm ideas we could make into sentences, and the teacher will then model creating sentences from the group’s ideas and write them down. We have been so amazed by the progress and attitude the children are showing towards their writing this term. They are showing great resilience and determination, and their enthusiasm to show what they can so is commendable. It is great to see the children applying the spellings and red words they are learning to their work. Well done year 1, keep it up!

Topic

We continued our art theme this week, learning about F N Souza. We compared his work to an artist he was influenced by, Picasso. We learnt how some artists like to magpie ideas and styles from others and incorporate this into their work, and how one person’s art can change over the course of their lifetime as their likes and dislikes evolve. Using art vocabulary, the children were able to discuss the similarities and differences between the 2 artists and challenged themselves to identify the artist of specific paintings, using what they had learnt about each. Children confidently used detailed justifications for their choices and spoke clearly with others about their thoughts.

Number Day

Friday 7th May is our Number Day! We dressed up in support of the fundraising day organised by the NSPCC. Take a look at some of our amazing costumes!

Today we centred our maths learning around the book ‘One is a snail, 10 is a crab.’ In this book numbers are represented by the number of feet an animal has. This helped us to explore odd and even numbers (as more than one animal had to be used for an odd number). It has helped us to reinforce our place value knowledge through a problem-solving day.

Love to learn

Love to learn is back!

This week our focus will be on topic. We would like the children to practise their abstract art skills and create a piece of abstract art. When we did this in school we focussed on self-portraits, but the children can choose their subject! We have explored the different degrees of abstract art, it is up to the children how abstract they want to make it. If they would like to continue in the style of Souza, he used thick dark lines to outline and bright and dark colours.

Important messages

  • Please could we ask for any old material you have but do not need. If you have any old offcuts or rags of material we could have, we would be very grateful.
  • Please encourage your child to read as much as possible at home.
  • Parent teacher consultations will be held next week. You will receive a Teams invite to your child’s account, please check you have the correct time.
