One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 10th September

Well done year five for a fantastic first week back!

This week in Guided Reading we started our new book, Ice Trap. We came up with open and closed questions for the characters, and clarified new words such as 'floes', 'optimism' and 'ominous' using dictionaries. We then followed this up in English by looking at the book's setting, Antarctica. With their learning partners, everyone created an icy setting, which looked amazing! With a focus on figurative language and fronted adverbials, we wrote setting descriptions for these, sharing lots of amazing ideas to improve our writing further. Next week, we will be researching Antarctica to create our own non-chronological reports.

In maths, we have continued with our learning on place value. We have worked really hard at ordering numbers and rounding, even challenging ourselves by looking at decimals to three decimal places. Next week, we will move on to look at using the column method to add and subtract four-digit numbers, including regrouping.

In the afternoons, we have been continuing with PSHE. At the start of the week, we discussed how we can regulate our feelings and the purpose of the zones of regulation in our classrooms. We discussed different situations that might make us angry, upset or worried, and created a tool kit of things we can do to help us when we are in these situations. At the end of the week, we read a book called 'Amelia Bedelia', which is about a girl who takes instructions very literally. We discussed the importance of clear communication to help people in understanding what we meant, and came up with a range of idioms to help our understanding of this, including 'feeling under the weather' and 'break a leg'. Next week, we will be looking at our new topic, Frozen Kingdom, in the afternoons.

Home Learning: This week, could you please create an Antarctic setting in a box, such as a shoe box, using materials you have around the house.
