One Childhood, One Chance

24.09.21 Weekly Learning

The children have had a fantastic week this week, culminating in a fun trip to Pegwell Bay on Friday to see where Julius Caesar supposedly landed in his expedition of Britain in 55BC.  We took part in Ludi - the Roman equivalent of the Greek Olympic Games - that started in Rome in 336BC and honoured the god Jupiter.  We played noughts and crosses (terne lapilli), soccer and dodgeball, which all are derived from the Romans!

Next week in Maths, we will be looking at strategies to calculate problems involving multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 and discuss why using place value is the best method.  From this, we will learn about doubling and halving mentally and through written methods, ending the week on finding factors of numbers.  We encourage children to practise their times tables as often as possible to help with their learning.

In English, the children will be continuing their text of Floodland, which they are really enjoying.  They will write a setting description of Eels Island and a character description of a new person in the book.  The children will write using action and description of an important scene in the book.

Our topic next week will involve how the Romans left Britain in 410AD, making way for the Anglo-Saxons.  They will focus on key battles between the Scots (Caledonians) and will design and make face masks to recreate the barbarian Picti tribe.

Love to Learn

Please log on to www.mymaths.co.uk as there are tasks set for you involving negative numbers.  Your password and username are the same as TTRS but please contact your teacher if you cannot remember or having difficulties logging on.   We would also like you to log on to TTRS and complete at least 3 minutes of Garage and a Studio game.

In SPAG this week, we have been learning about simple, compound and complex sentences.  We would like you to explain in your own words what each are and provide examples.  You can present this in any way you wish.

Messages from Year 6

Your child should have brought home a letter today that provides details of our Accelerated Reader (AR) home reading system and will further explain what your child should do once they have finished reading a book.  If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher.

Well done to everybody who presented for the House Captains role.  Due to the fact that nearly everyone prepared a speech and spoke beautifully, it was very difficult to choose only 8 children who will now represent the school.  We would like to say congratulations to our new house captains:

Saxons - Freya and Leon

Normans - Farrah and Marissa

Romans - Alfie and Finlay

Vikings - Imogen and Max H
