One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! w/b 1.11.21

Welcome back! It’s been amazing to see many excited happy faces come back with stories about their half-term. We’ve been having an amazing time getting back in to the swing of school with our new outdoor equipment for busy time!

This week in Team Indigo and Team Royal we have been learning…

Read, Write Inc.

A lot of us came back to different groups and different teachers in Read, Write Inc. So we’ve been having a great time learning with new people in new places!

We’ve also started playing some games to improve our oracy skills including the ‘1, 2, 3’ game where we try and count to 3 alternating together, over and over again as fast as possible, sometimes changing the numbers to actions to make it more difficult. This could be a fun game to play at home!

We have continued with our red word of the day! For each of these we’ve had a variety of activities to do to learn our red word, from painting, to pastels to playdoh! We’ve also done some during our busy time activities indoors or outdoors with our new wooden sounds!

Maths

This week in Maths we have been learning about number sequences, ordinal numbers, and comparing amounts and numbers.

We started the week focusing on describing and extending number sequences. For example, 11, 13, 15, ?. We did well with these and a lot of us even completed our challenges as well! We had to be careful that some of our challenges wouldn’t catch us out!

We moved on to ordinal numbers and where we use them. We came up with some amazing examples like birthdays, the date, floors of a building and so on. Once again, we did really well recognising how we use ordinal numbers and how to work out what position something is in.

We ended the week by learning how to compare amounts and numbers, using language such as ‘greater than’, ‘less than’, and ‘fewer than’. We learnt to count each group and work out which one is bigger than the other by circling the larger group and saying it in full sentences.

PSHE

This week we’ve been learning about kindness. We started the week by learning about how to recognise what others might be feeling through the book ‘Be Kind’ by Pat Zietlow Miller. We discussed how we can help others to feel happy and introduced kindness challenges so we can spread kindness around the school and outside.

We then moved onto learning about empathy and connection, and how we can tell if people are happy, sad or angry. We role played how we could support someone who is feeling upset and created a paper chain of ways to help people feel better and make connections with others.

We discussed ways we can help ourselves to calm down, including breathing techniques, reading a book, playing with friends and many other activities! We also focused on things, people and places that we like to help keep ourselves happy and wrote down and drew what these are.

Home Learning:

This week we would love for you to talk to your families about kindness and how you can show kindness at home.

We would then like you to create your own, short, kindness story to retell to the class or a friend!

This does not have to be recorded in books as we will discuss it with the children on Friday and listen to the wonderful stories you have thought of!
