One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 14th January

Well done Year 5 for a great week of learning! Here is what we have been up to:

Maths

In maths this week we have been looking at rounding whole numbers and decimals. Within this, we have practiced rounding numbers to the nearest thousand, hundred, ten, tenth and hundredth. We then moved on to look at adding and subtracting decimal numbers, including money, and applied this skill to solve problems using the column method and bar model.

English

In English, we have continued to centre our work around the short film ‘Piano’. We have continued to focus on using emotive language in our writing to describe a mood, writing excellent flashbacks to elicit emotions from the reader. Next week, we will be moving on to study our new text, The Highwayman, within which we will be looking at persuasive language skills.

Afternoon Learning

In the afternoons this week we have been learning about our champion of courage, Harriet Tubman. At the beginning of the week, we learnt about her life and how she showed courage by saving over 70 enslaved people in America during the nineteenth century. We then moved on to create our own portraits and collages of her, including vocabulary about her and the courage that she showed.

Next week, we will be starting our new Topic unit, Material World, where children will be asked the question ‘What is the most valuable material in the world and why?’.

Home Learning

This week, we would like the children to create a poster about Harriet Tubman, using their learning from class this week to help them. This can either be presented in Love to Learn books or on paper.

Messages

  • Next week we will be creating sculptures out of recycled plastics. Please could you send your child in with any recyclable plastic materials on Monday that they could use for this.
  • Sports Project is on Tuesday. Please could children come into school in their uniforms and trainers.
  • PE is on a Wednesday. Please could children come into school in their PE kits on this day.
  • Friday 4th November is Number Day. Children are able to come to school dressed as a superhero, rock star or something related to numbers.

Have a great weekend!
