One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 14th January

Champions of Courage!

This week we have been learning about Nelson Mandela, our Champion of Courage! It has been truly wonderful to hear the children talk about the life of Nelson Mandela and all he did in the fight for equality! We kicked off the week, by playing the children the song 'Free Nelson Mandela'. We discussed why the song was released and why it was so important. We then spent the week learning and talking about racial inequality and the role Nelson Mandela played in challenging this, not only in South Africa but around the world. We learnt more about where Nelson Mandela was from; learning about the traditional food, music and dancing. We also learnt about how the environment there, was different to here in England. We used pointillism, an art technique we have learnt, to create portraits of Nelson Mandela, using the colours of the South African flag. We really enjoyed doing this.

English

In English this week, we started to learn about leaving finger spaces between words, when we are writing a simple sentence. We wrote about what we got for Christmas. We continued our Read, Write Inc sessions, re-capping sounds we are unsure of. We are focusing on our special friends, reading and writing words containing qu, sh, th, ch and ng. Soon we will begin to learn our set 2 sounds. We have also begun to learn our red words (words you cannot sound out). So far, we have learnt I, the and a. We will continue to learn two new red words a week.

Maths

In maths this week, we have focused on counting to 20. We have been counting fixed group of objects as well as counting out a given amount of objects from a larger group. We have to remember to count carefully and to not rush, as sometimes we count a little too fast and miscount how many objects we have. We have practised counting up to 20 in lots of fun ways, for example, counting leaves into numbered bags

Notices

Monday 17th is Superhero dress up day. We cannot wait to see the children in their amazing creations.

When you have read a book, please remember to write the title of the book in the children's reading record and sign the box next to it. That way we know which books the children have read and completed.
