One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly Learning 25.02.22

This week:

In maths the children learnt about the order of operations. The children used BIDMAS to help them know which part of a calculation to solve first to achieve the answer given. Later in the week, the children solved algebraic equations and wrote their own based on the information given.

In English, the children started their new class text, ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’. The children wrote a newspaper article based on the family leaving their home to sail round the world on an epic journey. The children used direct and indirect speech as a focus.

The children started their new Topic this week: Peasants, Princes & Pestilence. They explored the ‘Big Question’… ‘What does it mean to be poor?’ For their Entry Point they learnt about the feudal system, a brief outline of the medieval period and planted their own seeds in role as ‘Serfs’.

Next week:

In English next week, the children will be writing a ship’s log in the role of Michael based on what he witnesses on his journey. Emotive language, tenses and figurative language are some of the skills we will be focused on.

In maths, for the first part of the week, the children will be reviewing their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages. Later in the week, the children will work on multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting fractions.

In Topic the children will be focusing on social hierarchy, exploring the feudal system in greater depth. They will be making their own Luttrell Psalter describing what life is like now.

Love to Learn

SPAG: Next week we are writing in the role of Michael describing what he sees on his journey. Find ten ambitious words that you could use in your writing. Then come up with ten synonyms (a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase).

My Maths: A 'My Maths' task has been set for the children based on their learning this week.

World Book Day

World Book Day is on Thursday 3rd March.  Children are invited to dress up as any character from a book.  They can also bring in a book to share with their class.

Throughout the day, the children will read a variety of stories with their class teacher and hear other adults read their favourite story or poem via a video link. The children’s learning during the day will focus on ‘Poetry for All’ and every class will explore a different poetry text.  The children will take part in reading and performing poetry, writing creatively and exploring the text’s illustrations to inspire their writing.

All children have been given a reading bingo card that offers a wide range of challenges that they can complete at home (either one challenge or many). Please sign your child’s bingo card and return to school by Friday 4th March.  Winners will be chosen and prizes will be given.

Children in years 2-6 will be set a MyOn reading challenge.  They can access this challenge via www.myon.co.uk

Emotional Wellbeing

My name is Verity and I am the Emotional Wellbeing Practitioner at Chilton Primary School. I form part of the Emotional Well Being Team working across Thanet offering mental health support in schools. I am employed by the NHS and I will be working in school on Tuesdays to support the whole school with a focus on well-being. This term we will be focusing on workshops for parents and whole classes.

I look forward to meeting all of the Parents and Children at Chilton!

The Speaker Competition

Each KS2 child will be invited to prepare, rehearse and perform a speech. The speech must last no longer than 2 minutes. The children will not be able to use presentations or props within their speech – just their voice. Each class will vote for the speaker to represent their class. These class speakers will then perform for a panel who will choose three winners from the school. These children will then compete in The Viking Speaker Competition with children from Upton Junior School and Ramsgate Arts Primary. The competition will take place in the auditorium at Royal Harbour School, with the winner being crowned ‘The Viking Young Speaker 2022’. The topic of the speech must be ‘Is it a wonderful world?’. The class competitions will take place during the final week of term 4 (between 28th March and 1st April). Class teachers will let their classes know the date and time each child will present during that week. The school competition will take place during their first week back after the Easter holidays, where our 3 school representatives will be chosen. The Viking Trust Competition will then take place during the final week of term 5
