Year 3 Weekly News 25.3.22
English
In English this week we have been learning how to write a non-chronological report. Our reports are about 'Sensational Spiders'. This week the children have read about spiders and found out many interesting facts to use in their reports. They have planned their report, thinking about what they will write about in each paragraph. We then wrote our introductions using general facts about spiders and learnt how to include the 4 different sentence types - statements, questions, commands and exclamation sentences. We finished our week writing captions for pictures and creating a labelled diagram. Next week, we will be continuing to write our non-chronological reports about spiders. The children will learn to include compound and complex sentences and then how to write a summary.
Maths
In maths this week we have been learning to add and subtract focussing on using diennes equipment. Diennes equipment (also known as base ten) uses blocks and cubes to represent ones, tens and hundreds. The children have solved addition and subtraction calculations and problems using the diennes blocks. Next week, we will be learning to multiply using peg boards and to divide using sharing of counters and place value counters.
RE
Our RE unit this week has been called 'What do we know about Jesus?'. We have found out about how Jesus has been represented in paintings and in the stories of the bible. We found out that some stories in the bible portray Jesus in a positive light and some portray him in a more negative light. Next week in RE we will be learning about Jewish festivals.

Mrs Cheshire has previously sent home a letter about our Trust wide Oracy Speaker Competition. Please see the letter below:
Dear Parents and Carers,
Across Viking Academy Trust, we are working with the children to improve their oracy skills. Oracy refers to our ability to communicate effectively using spoken language. Throughout terms 4 and 5, we will be running ‘The Viking Speaker Competition’ for our key stage two children, to help the children further develop their speaking and presentation skills. As part of the competition, each KS2 child will be invited to prepare, rehearse and perform a speech. The speech must last no longer than 2 minutes. The children will not be able to use presentations or props within their speech – just their voice. Each class will vote for the speaker to represent their class. These class speakers will then perform for a panel who will choose three winners from the school. These children will then compete in The Viking Speaker Competition with children from Upton Junior School and Ramsgate Arts Primary. The competion will take place in the auditorium at Royal Harbour School, with the winner being crowned ‘The Viking Young Speaker 2022’. The topic of the speech must be ‘Is it a wonderful world?’. The class competitions will take place during the final week of term 4 (between 28th March and 1st April). Class teachers will let their classes know the date and time each child will present during that week. The school competition will take place during their first week back after the Easter holidays, where our 3 school representatives will be chosen. The Viking Trust Competion will then take place during the final week of term 5 (date TBC). If your child wishes to enter, please support them in creating and rehearsing their speech, ready for performing to their class during the last week of term 4. We haven't as yet received any entries for the speaker competition for Year 3 so for this week's homework we would like the children to write a speech entitled 'Is it a wonderful world?'. We will obviously not make the children stand up and say their speech in front of everyone if they don't want to, but it would be nice if everyone could have a go at writing a speech.

- We are very excited to announce that we have been invited to enter the Turner Contemporary's annual art competition.
This year’s theme Belonging is inspired by the work of Ingrid Pollard who will be bringing her major solo show to Turner Contemporary in Summer 2022. Pollard uses film, photography, sculpture and installation to explore ideas of identity.
This will be explored more throughout our PSHE topic next term; Be Here, Be You, Belong.
As well as taking part in art work within school, we are asking you to design something at home! With the theme being ‘belonging’ you can design anything from a painting, sculpture, contemporary dance or speech!
The winner of this competition will have their work exhibited at the Turner contemporary!
By your child entering this competition, you will be giving permission for their piece of art to be possibly displayed at the Tuner contemporary.
Please bring in your designs or send any videos to Mrs Winchcombe (poppy.winchcombe@chiltonprimary.co.uk) by the 28th April. These will then be passed on to the Turner Contemporary.
- KS2 children are invited to make an Easter bonnet and bring it into school on Friday 1st April. There will be a prize for the best bonnet in each Year group. The children will also be taking part in an Easter egg hunt on Friday.
- School finishes on Friday 1st April at 3.15pm for the Easter break.
