One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 22nd April 2022

Year 5 have had a fantastic start to Term 5, and have been working extremely hard! Here is what we have been up to:

Maths

In maths this week, we have been learning how to calculate powers of 10 to solve problems. We then moved on to calculate Roman Numerals, applying what we had learnt to solve addition and subtraction questions involving these.

Next week, we will be moving on to practice adding and subtracting measures, including measures involving decimals. We will then apply this knowledge to begin to solve multi-step problems involving these.

English

This week, we began our new book 'Street Child'. On Wednesday, we made predictions on the genre, era, setting and plot of the book, using the front cover to help. We have read the first four chapters of the book, acted out how Jim was feeling when he arrived at the workhouse, and wrote descriptions of the landlord, Mr Spink, and the workhouse. When writing these descriptions, we focussed on using figurative language, such as personification, similes and metaphors.

Next week, we will be describing Jim's escape from the workhouse, focussing on weaving action and description.

PSHE

This term, our PSHE focus will be 'Be here, be you, belong'. We read a book called 'Everybody Counts' and discussed what makes us all individual. We then created mood boards to show our passions and compared these with the rest of the class. Throughout the term, we will continue to have a weekly PSHE lesson which is focussed on this text.

We will also be beginning our new RE unit next week, where we will be learning about Christianity and stories in the Christian Bible.

Messages

  • PE is on a Friday. Please could children come to school in the correct PE clothes on this day.

  • Sports Project is on Wednesday. Please could children wear trainers with their school uniform on this day.

  • Please could children continue to read regularly (at least four times a week) at home. Children can also be using MyOn to complete home reading tasks.

Home Learning

Each week, children will be set five-ten spellings by their spelling teacher to practice at home for a spelling test on the following Friday.

Miss Isaac's Group: lurk, churn, alter, loyal, blurted, bullied

Miss Hayzelden and Mrs England's Groups: unique, dialogue, antique, catalogue, cheque

Mr Abel's Group: competition, conscious, controversy, curiosity, conscience

For home learning this week, we would love the children to produce an entry for the Turner Art Competition. The theme is 'Belonging', which links with our learning in PSHE this week. Here is the information:

We are very excited to announce that we have been invited to enter the Turner Contemporary's annual art competition.

This year’s theme Belonging is inspired by the work of Ingrid Pollard who will begin her major solo show to Turner Contemporary in Summer 2022. Pollard uses film, photography, sculpture and installation to explore ideas of identity.

This will be explored more throughout our PSHE topic this term; Be Here, Be You, Belong.

As well as taking part in art work within school, we are asking you to design something at home! With the theme being ‘belonging’ you can design anything from a painting, sculpture, contemporary dance or speech!

The winner of this competition will have their work exhibited at the Turner contemporary!

By your child entering this competition, you will be giving permission for their piece of art to be possibly displayed at the Tuner contemporary.

Please bring in your designs or send any videos to Mrs Winchcombe (poppy.winchcombe@chiltonprimary.co.uk) by the 28th April. These will then be passed on to the Turner Contemporary.
