One Childhood, One Chance

Year 4 Weekly News

English

This week we have been beginning to describe the characters that we meet in the book. Throughout Edward’s journey he meets a number of interesting characters. We have described Lolly, who is a girl that was very nasty to Edward! We described Bull who is a homeless man that found Edward in a pile a rubbish and then we created our own characters to describe that Edward could have met in the story. We focused on Expanded noun phrases with prepositions and inferring characters using verbs and adverbs.

Maths

This week in maths, we have been learning about brackets. In year 4, we only need to know that the brackets coming first in the calculation. We concentrated on using our four operations to work out the different bracket equations. We also looked at finding the perimeter and the area of shapes by measuring the outside and counting the inside of shapes to find the area.

Topic

This week in Topic, we have learnt about the different parts of a volcano, we also created our own volcanoes out of paper and bottles! We then moved onto the geography of volcanoes and where most of the volcanoes are located in the world. The children found ‘The ring of fire’ very interesting. We finished the week by looking at tectonic plates and how they created volcanoes and earthquakes.

HOME LEARNING

For your home learning this week, we would like you to create a short story that includes the character you created this week. It can include Edward if you want but it doesn’t have to. What can your character get up to?

Please continue to practise the weekly personalised spellings ready for Friday.
