One Childhood, One Chance

Year 3 Weekly News - Friday 11th January

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning about number and place value. We began by partitioning numbers in the most basic way (splitting them up into their parts) e.g. 137 = 100 and 30 and 7. Then we thought about different ways we could partition the same number e.g. 137 = 50+50+20+10+7    and 137 = 25+25+25+25+30+5+2.  We have also been comparing numbers using the comparison signs < > and = and then ordering numbers from smallest to largest or vice versa.

English

In English this week we began reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. We have focussed on writing in role as if we are different characters from the story e.g. as if we are Charlie, Mr Wonka or a secret spy worker from the factory. The children have learnt to use rhetorical questions whilst writing in role and to use conjunctions to justify and explain their opinions within their writing.

Love to Learn

SPAG: We would like the children to practise sorting word types. Sort these words into verbs, adverbs, nouns and adjectives and then add more of your own to the list.

Maths: Think about the numbers you have been learning about in maths this week - were they 2 digit, 3 digit, 4 or 5 digit? Choose 5 numbers and partition them in different ways (as above).  E.g. 437 = 200+200+15+15+7

Messages

The children all completed their Champions for Sport challenge with enthusiasm on Wednesday, and our visiting sportsman commented on how great the children were, both during his assembly with them and during their activities with him. Well done Year 3!
