Maths

In maths this week we have been learning about fractions. The children have learnt to compare and order fractions using fraction walls.

They have learnt that if the denominators are the same, they can order the fractions by looking at the numerators e.g. put these fractions in order: 2/5, 4/5, 1/5 put in order would be: 1/5, 2/5, 4/5.

They have learnt that if the fractions are unit fractions (where the numerator is a 1) they can look at the size of the fractions on the fraction wall. E.g. ordering these fractions 1/10, 1/2, 1/6 put in order from smallest to largest would be 1/10, 1/6, 1/2. They then used these skills to solve problems involving fractions such as: Bob and Bill have the same size water bottles. Bob has drunk 1/8 of his water bottle and Bill has drunk 1/6 of his bottle. Who has drunk the least water?

English

In English this week, we have continued reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We have focused on writing setting descriptions and the children have produced some great pieces of writing! They have been using expanded noun phrases to describe how things look in the setting, verbs and adverbs to describe how things move in the setting and similes to add to their descriptions. We really enjoyed making a diorama of the Chocolate Room and then writing a description of this amazing room.

Topic

We have begun our Chocolate topic this week. We have started with some science learning. The children have learnt about the ingredients in chocolate and the effect of eating too much fats and sugars on our bodies. They have presented data about how long it takes to burn off one chocolate bar when doing different exercises in a table and then a bar graph. The children have learnt that if we eat foods high in sugar or fat we should exercise the burn off the energy they give us, or they will make us unhealthy.
