Weekly News

Year 5 Weekly News

Welcome to the Year 5 blog. Each week we will update you with what we have been learning.

Reminders:

Please bring in a plain white t-shirt  that can be drawn on by FRI 17th MAY . We will need it for our topic.

“My Home Town” – home learning task

Where we grow up plays a huge part in our lives – shaping who we are, what we do, who we know and where we go! For your home learning project for ‘Good to be Me’, over the course of Term 5, we would like you to create something that tells us all about what ‘My Home Town’ means to you. This home learning can take any form – there is no right or wrong way but you can be as creative as you like!

PE is every Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure children have the correct PE kit in school.

Year 5 children are expected to read for at least 10 minutes every day and hand in their reading record daily.

Learning this week:

In English, we have started to ‘publish’ our writing. Everyone has a Published Pieces book where they get the opportunity to write up improved pieces of writing in their best handwriting. We are continuing with poetry this term and this week have read The Lady of Shalott (1832) by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. We have written character descriptions and focused on enriching our vocabulary choices.

In maths, we have secured our understanding of the long multiplication method. We applied this understanding in different ways by completing a range of fluency, reasoning and problem solving questions.

We continued with our topic, ‘Being Human’ this week. In groups we completed a number of challenges including piecing together a skeleton, identify different types of joints and naming key muscles. To give us a ‘hands on’ experience, we dissected a pig’s heart and (if we wanted to) had the opportunity to hold it and feel the different tissues.

Here are some photos of the fantastic learning that took place:

Home Learning:

Please complete the challenges on Mymaths.

SPaG Challenge – find examples of subordinate clauses in your reading book.

There is no right or wrong way to complete a Love to Learn task! Please be as imaginative or as creative as you would like! Love to Learn tasks should be returned on the Wednesday following them being set. Whilst books may not be formally marked, in class we will spend time looking at and enjoying what everyone has learned at home and rewards and house points will be given!
