One Childhood, One Chance

Learning Adventure Is Under Way

The first few weeks of term at ‘big school’ are important as the boys and girls strike up new relationships with teachers and staff, while making new friends in class and in the playground.

The learning curve is structured through creative activities and gentle learning with the Early Years team ensuring that the children have caring support each day.

Short phonic and maths learning is introduced as well as activities to develop motor skills, together with play activities that includes specially-developed yoga for children, and storytime. Next term they will enjoy a broader curriculum.

Their learning journey at Chilton began with home visits and part time attendance during the first few weeks of term to ease the youngsters in gently before integration into the full school day.

Hannah Cheshire, Assistant Head and Head of Early Years said the phased approach to school works well.

She said: “The Reception children come to us at the end of the summer term where they have a relaxed introduction to Chilton with play activities and a picnic with their families.

“Then the first part of the new school year is built around underpinning their move into full days with us as they process lots of information about the school and the people they will see every day. It works and we can already see their confidence growing as they adapt to their new lives in school.”

Head of School Kate Law added: “Confidence is key and we ensure the little children have a safe, secure and enjoyable transition into school life. It is a very big step for them, and their families as well.

“Within just a few weeks we are noticing how the children are embracing life at Chilton. These are very positive signs and bode well for them to enjoy a happy and successful learning adventure with us.”
