Despite the illness that is making its presence through Year 5 (Mr Abel included) felt, we have had another fantastic work with superb effort and some wonderful learning taking place.
English
This week in English, we have been working on writing a newspaper report about the departure of Shackleton and his men from England to Antarctica. Firstly, we wrote an introduction focusing on the 5 W's before planning the rest of our article. We then focused on reported speech and direct speech to finish our article. Next week, we will be writing a newspaper report about the triumphant rescue of the crew of Endurance.
Maths
This week in Maths, we have been looking at multiplication and division. We recapped our knowledge of the column method before breaking down how to use the column method to complete two digit by two digit multiplications. We followed a number of steps to help us, made great progress and eventually cracked it! We then looked at division using the bus stop method. Next week, we will be consolidating our knowledge of the four operations.
Thematic Curriculum
In the afternoons this week, we have been looking at the mountains and mountain ranges of both North America and the UK. We then made comparisons and, using the skills picked up in recent English lessons, created a non-chronological report about North American and UK mountains. We also completed a piece of artwork using watercolours inspired by John Constable's 'The Wheat Field'
