One Childhood, One Chance

W/B 14th September 2020 Weekly Year 5 Blog

With all the children increasingly settled into their new class, we’ve had another wonderful week in Year 5. As we’ve started to dive into our learning, the effort across the whole year group has been extraordinary. Everyone has really embraced the new challenges of Year 5.

Learning this week

In our Guided Reading lessons this week, we continued our 'Ice Trap!' adventure as we continued to learn the fate of Shackleton and his crew. In Guided Reading, we used our detective skills to identify and clarify unknown words, summarised our adventure so far and even put Shackleton himself in the hot seat to ask him the important questions that had come to us so far. Our English was also inspired by the crew of the Endurance as we described the icy Antarctic setting. To inspire our writing, in art, we created an Antarctic diorama. In Maths, building on our learning last week, we started to work on our column addition and subtraction. Finally, our afternoon work has focused around ‘Living in the wider world’. The problems on the Endurance encouraged us to consider the importance of rules and overcome stereotypes and prejudice.

Learning next week

Next week, in English, we will continue our Shackleton inspired writing work, discovering more about the man himself to create detailed character descriptions. We will even be creating Shackleton collages in art to visually display the depth and layers of his character. In PSHE, our focus will shift to keeping healthy minds. Meanwhile, in Maths, we will be looking at fractions.
