One Childhood, One Chance

W/B Friday 9th November 2020 Weekly Year 5 Blog

What a week! The children returned to school focused and enthused about their learning. We have been extremely impressed with their maturity and understanding, especially when plans change around hand washing times and hourly air-changes in our classes.  They understand that our strict routines keep them, their bubbles and their families safe.  Thank you for your continued support with these challenges.

Notices :

  • Vikings won the House Points meaning they have a non-school uniform day on Friday 20th November 2020.
  • Please send your child into school with suitable outside shoes (wellies / trainers) as the year 5 children play on the school field at break time and lunch time.

Home learning

Thank you for supporting your child this week with their home learning.  The children shared their home learning books to each other.  We would like the children to complete a MyMaths challenge that has been set on mymaths.co.uk Your child's username and password will be the same as last year, however the children have been given these details again. The children have been set a times table and a fraction challenge. We would also like the children to create a poster explaining the differences between the words - their, there and they're.  Please return completed home learning by Wednesday 18th November.

Learning for children who are isolating at home will be uploaded to the year group Monday morning.

Learning this week

In Guided Reading this week the children have continued to read and enjoy our new text - The Jamie Drake Equation.  They have completed comprehension activities, drama,  questioning and clarifying.  In English, the children spent this week using their describing skills focusing on figurative language that included: personification, similes, metaphors as well as using a variety of sentences openers including front adverbials.  The children described an alien planet and then used their artistic skills to create their own alien planet.  They finished the week by describing their own alien planet and included some fabulous and ambitious vocabulary. In maths the children explored worded problems using all four operations.  They worked with their partners and independently to challenge themselves.

Learning next week

Next week, the children will continue to read The Jamie Drake Equation text.  They will be focusing on writing for a given viewpoint including letters and diary entries.  In Maths the children will return to fractions including: equivalent fractions, ordering and comparing and simplifying fractions.  Our afternoons will be spent starting our RE topic - Islam.  We will also be taking part in an anti-bulling activity on Monday.
