One Childhood, One Chance

Welcome to Year 5 2021/22

Welcome back to school and welcome to Year 5!

We have has a fantastic start to the year and the children have slotted into Year 5 seamlessly. Mr Abel and Miss Hayzelden, as well as Miss Isaac who has been teaching a learning group, have been incredibly impressed with the attitude and effort of the children so far.

This week, we have been working on setting descriptions in English, looking specifically at a beach scene. We planned on Thursday, gathering lots of ambitious and adventurous vocabulary before writing our fantastic descriptions on Friday. We also predicted what our new book, 'Ice Trap', is about and clarified any words we were unsure on from the blurb. In Maths, we have been working on Place Value, firstly we played a number of games to help us understand the values of different digits. Then, we looked at how understanding the value of digits helps us to compare different numbers. In the afternoons, we have refreshed our knowledge of the Chilton Way, discussing many ways to ensure that we are following 'Be Ready, Be Respectful and Be Safe', created a class charter and discusses our feelings about starting Year 5 in circle time.

Next week, we will continue looking at Chilton Values and revisit Zones of Regulation in PSHE, we will begin reading 'Ice Trap' and complete an Antarctic setting description in English and continue studying Place Value in Maths, specifically ordering numbers, rounding and negative numbers.

Important information:

In Term 1, Year 5 PE will be swimming and will take place on Thursday afternoons. Please can children come to school in uniform and remember swimming kits. Sports Project will be Wednesdays. Please can children come to school in uniform but wearing trainers.

Due to continued regulations, please could parents ensure that children are not bringing unnecessary items into school.

Uniform

Our uniform makes us a team and gives us a sense of community. It also keeps everyone smart and helps children to feel ready to learn. Please could we also ask that children’s uniform be named – it makes it a lot easier to reunite lost items with their owners!

Our uniform consists of:  Grey trousers / skirt / shorts / pinafore  Blue gingham summer dress  White shirt / polo shirt  Navy blue sweatshirt / jumper / cardigan (no hoodies apart from school supplied items)  Grey, black or white socks / tights  Black shoes (no trainers, sandals)

Hair longer than shoulder length needs to be tied back and jewellery is not permitted but children may wear a wrist-watch. Children should also not have nail varnish or temporary tattoos left on from the weekend – please could these be removed for school. Thank you!

Please do not hesitate to email if you have any questions (tom.abel@chiltonprimary.co.uk , alicia.hayzelden@chiltonprimary.co.uk , carol.isaac@chiltonprimary.co.uk)

Have a great weekend!
