One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 19th November 2021

Well done to Year 5 for a great week of work! Here is what we have been up to:

English

This week, we have worked on expressing viewpoint in our writing through a range of tasks. We wrote a memory of when Jamie Drake’s mum and dad met, an email from Jamie to his Dad on the ISS, and then his dad’s reply. Within these tasks, we developed our understanding of the past tense, and challenged ourselves to use this consistently throughout our writing.

Next week, we will move on to persuasive writing, within which we will create leaflets to persuade others to visit our own alien planet.

Maths

In maths, we have moved on to learn about the properties of 2-D shapes. Within this, we have also explored the different types of angles within these shapes and the difference between regular and irregular polygons. At the end of the week, we finished off our learning on 2-D shapes by beginning to recognise 3-D shapes from 2-D nets.

Next week, we will move on to measure. Within this we will be converting metric units and calculating area and perimeter of different shapes.

PSHE

This week our focus has been anti-bullying. Within this, we discussed the importance of empathy and forgiveness, and the importance that this plays in developing healthy relationships. We read the book ‘Desmond and the Very Mean Word’ and discussed the importance of forgiveness on our own wellbeing. We then acted out different scenes showing forgiveness.

Next week, our afternoon learning will be in our Topic lessons, where we will be learning all about space. Our big question is : What is the Universe made up of?

Home Learning

For this week’s home learning, we would like the children to design their own anti-bullying poster, using their learning from this week to help them.
