One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 11th February 2022

What a wonderful last week of term Year 5 have had! Here is what we have been up to:

English:

In English, we have finished reading ‘The Lady of Shalott’, summarising the key events and clarifying key vocabulary as a whole class to support our understanding. We then used this information to help us write a letter from the Lady of Shalott to Lancelot, using figurative language to describe how she felt when she first caught sight of him in the mirror.

After half-term, we will be beginning our new text ‘Odysseus’ and creating comic strips to tell our own Greek myth.

Maths:

This week we have used multiplication and division to solve difficult scaling problems in real-life situations, such as in recipes. We then practiced this by measuring a range of objects in the classroom and scaling their measurements with different amounts. We discussed finding relationships between numbers to decide on the number that we needed to scale by.

After half-term, we will be using the part-part-whole model to solve problems involving money.

Afternoon Learning:

At the beginning of the week, we finished our sewing in Topic and evaluated our final product. We discussed what went well, and the challenges that we faced and how we overcame them. We are really proud of Year 5 for mastering this new skill!

For the rest of the week, we have been learning about e-safety. We discussed the importance of staying safe online, particularly when playing games with other people, and the importance of being kind. We then made our own pledges to stay safe online.

After half-term, we will spend the first week studying our RE topic of Buddhist worship and beliefs.

Home Learning:

For home learning, we would like the children to create an online gaming guide, using their learning from this week to help them. They will need to imagine that they work for a gaming company to create a character or mascot who will act as a gaming guide for people who are chatting online. The aim of the character is to help make gaming chats more respectful and safe. Within this the children could consider:

  • The character or mascot’s username

  • What the character looks like

  • When or how the character will appear to users

  • 5 key online safety messages around making gaming chats respectful and safe that the character will deliver

Reminders:

  • This week the Chilton Fundraisers will be sending home a tube of smarties for each of the children. Once they have eaten the contents, we ask that they fill the tube up with 20p coins* and return the tube to school by Friday 25th February. They could do some helpful jobs around the house to earn the money.

*Please note, whilst we suggest 20p coins, we are happy with any donation.

Thanks in advance for any contributions you make.

  • PE will continue to be on a Wednesday. Children should come to school in (weather appropriate) PE kit. Please can we ensure that children are in the correct PE kit (blue/black tracksuit and white t-shirt).

  • In Term 4, a bonus PE session will continue in place of Sports Project. Children should continue to come to school in normal school uniform and trainers on a Tuesday.

  • Please could children continue to read frequently and quiz on AR. Children should be reading at home a minimum of four times a week.

Have a lovely half-term!
