Year 5

Year 5

Welcome to Term 4 and welcome to our blog. Each week we will update you with what we have been learning.

Reminders:

PE every Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure children have the correct PE kit in school.

Year 5 children are expected to read for at least 10 minutes every day and hand in their reading record daily.

Learning this week:

We spent the beginning of the week completing SPaG, Reading and Maths tests. These are to help inform and support teacher assessments and are not linked to the CATS test that take place in the summer term. All the children approached the tests with a positive attitude and tried their absolute best.

In English, we have been writing a survival guide inspired by the challenges Torak is experiencing in our reading book ‘Wolf Brother.’ The guides were an opportunity to use a range of punctuation and use technical vocabulary.

In Maths, we have been completing word problems using the bar method. This method allows the question to be broken down into ‘chunks’ and presented in a bar to present the information and solve.

Our Topic lessons have been learning about the Athenians and Spartans, we have written a letter detailing our lives as one of these historic people. We have also been learning about the brutal Persian Wars and created a timeline and comic strip to detail the key events that took place.

Finally, as I’m sure you’ve been aware, this week has been Book Week. We have continued to read our class book – Wolf Brother- and have had the opportunity to read with Year 2. World Book Day saw an array of amazing costumes so that you for the fantastic effort.

Home Learning:

How have aspects of Athenian life influenced life today?

For example, the architecture, the literature and stories (such as stories about Troy), festivals and games and the Parthenon as a modern-day tourist attraction.

There is no right or wrong way to complete a Love to Learn task! Please be as imaginative or as creative as you would like! Love to Learn tasks should be returned on the Wednesday following them being set. Whilst books may not be formally marked, in class we will spend time looking at and enjoying what everyone has learned at home and rewards and house points will be given!
