Year 5 Weekly News

Welcome to the Year 5 blog. Each week we will update you with what we have been learning.

Reminders and news:

Please complete the permission form for our school trip on Wednesday 3rd April. We are looking for parent helpers so if you are able to help please let us know.

Children in Years 3-6 are invited to create their own Easter bonnet or hat if they would like to for the last day of term (Friday 5th April). The winner from each year group will be selected by their teachers during the day.

PE every Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure children have the correct PE kit in school.

Year 5 children are expected to read for at least 10 minutes every day and hand in their reading record daily.

Learning this week:

On Monday, Chilton celebrated science. All the lessons had a space theme. We designed our own constellation and wrote the myth behind how it was created. In maths we started our reflection learning and created a symmetrical space rocket. In the afternoon, we visited the mobile planetarium where we transported into space! Collaboratively, we created a class planet which will be displayed in the school hall.

Wolf Brother is proving a popular book with the year group, everyone is at the edge of their seats waiting to find out what will happen to the main character, Torak, next. Our writing has been recounting Torak’s latest challenge. This week he entered the depths of a dark cave so we used our senses to describe it in detail.

In maths, we have been learning how to reflect and translate shapes. We have learnt how to use the x and y axes accurately and to identify coordinates of the reflected and translated shapes.

Topic has continued to transport us back in history. We have been exploring Rome’s famous landmarks and created a tourist guide for them. We have also been exploring the Roman army.

 Home Learning:

Mymaths and SPaG.

SPaG Challenge: Over the last two weeks we have been classifying words. Choose a page (or two) from your reading book and classify as many of the words as you can.

Children in Years 3-6 are invited to create their own Easter bonnet or hat if they would like to for the last day of term (Friday 5th April). The winner from each year group will be selected by their teachers during the day.

There is no right or wrong way to complete a Love to Learn task! Please be as imaginative or as creative as you would like! Love to Learn tasks should be returned on the Wednesday following them being set. Whilst books may not be formally marked, in class we will spend time looking at and enjoying what everyone has learned at home and rewards and house points will be given!
