One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News

Year 6 this week have worked exceptionally hard as we approach SATs week (beginning 13th May).  Everyone is ready to tackle these tests and we all feel more confident after a run through of the week.  The tests this week have been beneficial for the children to become familiar of what the week may be like, how to pace themselves as well as the style of questions that may come up.  Every child worked extremely well throughout the week and the Year 6 teachers are very proud of them.

Next week, beginning Tuesday (because of Bank holiday Monday), we are starting our Breakfast Club.  If your child has not signed up to Breakfast Club, they can still come along within the week.  Not only is it a chance to fuel our bodies ready for the day ahead, it is also an opportunity to bond with each other, ready for the SATs.  Next week and continuing into SATs week, we will have bacon sandwiches, eggs, fruit, croissants and squash on offer for the children to enjoy.

This week, the children used their homework task to write a persuasive advert to convince people to head to their chosen destinations.  They wrote in paragraphs and used emotive language to encourage people to visit their selected place.

In maths, children used ratio to scale up and down.  They began by comparing quantities then moved on to scaling shapes up and down.  They finished the week sharing unequally (for example: Claire and Matt share £360 but Claire had £40 more than Matt.  How much did they each get?)  Children used their ratio skills to solve a range of problems.

In topic, children loved using a variety of media to create nebula (the birth of stars).  They used glitter, ribbons, paint, pastels and other materials to create their pictures.  We also had discussions about stars, for which the children had excellent questions.

Love to Learn this week will focus on your learning about stars.  We would like the children to create a factfile about stars.  They can design this in any way they would like but it must be informative and factual.  Key vocabulary that they may wish to include would be stars, galaxy, nebula, black hole, supernova and planets.
