Weekly News! 22.11.24
What a fantastic first week we have had in Year 1! Take a look at what we have been getting up to 😊
Maths
This week we looked at the value of coins up to 50p. We learnt to exchange money and found amounts in different ways!
When we exchanged, we had to choose a coin e.g. 10p and then exchange it for different coins making that amount (e.g. 5p and 5p). We used the Numicon tiles to help us with this learning. When we found amounts in different ways, we looked at how much an object cost. We then had to work out how to pay for the object in two different ways. This is linked to our problem-solving skill for this term finding different possibilities. We used the Numicon to help us to find these different possibilities and then put the coins we needed into the purses. We are so proud of all their hard work with money this week. Well done Team Cornflower and Team Sapphire!
Next week in maths the children will be looking at length!
Fact of the week
Our fact of the week this week is:
3+3=6 (linking to doubles)
We will also look at the inverse of this fact (6-3=3)
Our fact of the week next week will be:
4+4=8 (linking to doubles) and the inverse fact (8-4=4)
Read, Write Inc.
This week in Read, Write Inc. We have met our new RWI teachers. We have been reviewing our sounds and working so hard phonetically reading words. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.
Home Learning
Thank you for your wonderful learning, we can see you have worked so hard.
Part of our thematic learning this term is to learn about the 4 countries which make up the UK. Now you have researched the foods associated with the countries below, please can we now ask you to make/buy a dish (if you are able) from the countries listed below and bring the dish in on Thursday 28th November.
We must ask that no foods contain nuts. For allergy reasons, we also ask that food which has been brought comes in to school in the original packaging and any homemade food has a list of ALL the ingredients. We really do appreciate your help and support on this!
This week, for Love to Learn, we would like you to buy/make the foods associated with the countries as follows:
Red Romans - England
Yellow Saxons - Northern Ireland
Green Normans - Scotland
Blue Vikings - Wales
Please remember that children are only allowed to use 1 page in their books each week. Thank you!
Love to Learn books need to be returned on Wednesday each week (Thursday the following week).
Thematic
This week we continued our new thematic learning, Thunderbolts and Lightning. We looked at what happens to trees and plants during the different seasons. We then looked at evergreen and deciduous trees.
Next week we will be continuing our topic Thunderbolts and lightning, and we will be looking at the countries and the capital cities of the United Kingdom.
Computing
This week, we learnt how technology is used at school, in the classroom, at home and in the outside world. Next, we looked at what a computer can do and learnt what the main parts of a computer are called and what they do. After that, we learnt what a mouse is and what it can be used for. We explored how the mouse can be used in different ways. Then, we learnt what a keyboard is and used this to do some typing on a computer. We learnt that we can use the keyboard to change/edit text. Finally, we learnt that it is important to follow some rules when using technology. We learnt that in doing so, we are keeping ourselves and others safe as well as respecting the equipment.
