One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 7.3.25

What an amazing week we have had! take a look what we have been up to…

World Book Day

A big thank you to you all for the outstanding costumes this year the children looked incredible.

Maths

This week in maths, we have learnt to add using the make 10 strategy by adding 1 digit and a 2 digit numbers and regrouping into tens and ones using base 10. At the beginning of the week we used tens frames and place value counters to practice adding two 1 digit numbers. We selected a number sentence and then filled up our tens frames with counters. We partitioned the smaller number so that we could make ten. Once we were confident adding two 1 digit numbers through making 10, we challenged ourselves to use 3 tens frames, this time we added a 2-digit number with a 1 digit number. We continued partitioning our smallest number to get to the nearest tens number.

Later in the week, we continued to add 2 single digit numbers but we had the challenge of using the base 10 to do this. We had to make both of the numbers in the calculation with the base 10, regroup to make 10 and then discuss what the answer is. Our challenge was to start a teens number with a single digit number.

Next week, we will be looking at multiplication by placing numbers in equal groups and doubling numbers.

Fact of the week

Our fact of the week this week is:

0+3=3

3+0=3

Read, Write Inc.

This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been reviewing sounds we know and learning new sounds. We have continued to use our sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.

Reading

Mondays – RWI books to be changed by an adult. Please could ALL reading wallets be put in the trays so that we can check who has earned a certificate.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – children can change their learning zone book (the one with the coloured sticker on). Please help them to have this book ready to change when they come in to the classroom in the mornings. Thank you!

Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves (on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)- first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.

Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!

There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.

If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Thematic

This week we have looked Today we learnt all about the different types of animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. We enjoyed a full afternoon of activities based around our learning. We sorted animals into their groups and looked at the work of Steve Irwin and David Attenborough.

Today we learnt to describe and compare the basic structure of a range of different animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. We matched real life animal x-rays with the correct animal, we took our time to compare three types of birds and we looked at the similarities and differences of animals using pictures and animal figures.

Next week we will be continuing out thematic Explorers and our science and look at the diets of different animals and put them into categories of herbivores, carnivores or omnivores. We will then look at famous people from the past Charles Darwin and James Cook in history.

Love to Learn

Thank you so much to the children/families for completing their love to learn tasks in Term 3.

For thins weeks love to learn we would like the children to go on a nature walk and look for signs of Spring!  You can show case this any way you wish.

Love to Learn books need to be returned on Wednesday each week.

Please remember that children are only allowed to use 1 page in their books each week. Thank you!

Show and Tell

A reminder that children should not be bringing any toys into school as these can get easily broken or lost. If children would like to do show and tell, please email a picture of the show and tell to class teacher(s) and we can use this when the children share with the class. Please could all parents ensure that children are not bringing toys etc in from home.

Wellie Boots

The children have loved having access to the top field and the forest school area. The children have said they particularly like den building in the forest school and going on the trim trail. Just a reminded if they would like to use this area, they need to wear wellie boots. Please can these be kept in the crates outside Team Cornflower in a named carrier bag. Other footwear (e.g. old trainers, other types of boots etc are not permitted).

Additionally, if you have any wellie boots that no longer fit and you would not mind donating to the school we would greatly appreciate any wellie boots.

Children are no longer required to wear trainers into school on a Monday.

PE is on a Tuesday afternoon. Children need to wear a plain white t-shirt, black or navy bottoms and a plain black or blue sweatshirt.
