Weekly News! 2.5.2025

We have had another fabulous week of learning this week in Year 1!
Year 1 class assembly
Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will be moving the year 1 class assembly from Thursday 15th May to Wednesday 2nd July at 2.50. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Read, Write Inc.
This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been reviewing sounds we know and learning new sounds. We have continued to use our sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops. Our writing showpiece this week saw us writing about our toys and the materials they are made from.
Maths
This week in maths, we have been learning about 3D shapes. We have been learning to recognise and name common 3D shapes (sphere, cylinder, cube, cuboid, cone, pyramid, prism), recognise these shapes in different orientations and sizes and identify these shapes in the environment. Towards the end of the week, we used construction and everyday materials to make 3D shapes.
Next week, we will be learning about money. We will be learning to recognise and know the value of different coins and notes. The children will learn how to exchange money and how to make amounts in different ways.
Fact of the week
Our fact of the week this week is:
8+0=8
0+8=8
8-0=8
Thematic
This week, children have used their understanding from previous lessons to compare and group materials based on their properties. They will also describe the properties of simple materials and discuss their suitability for different purposes and uses.
Next week, children will learn about the history of toys. We will start this learning by looking at the toys which their grandparents (or people of a similar age) played with when they were young. Please see love to learn section below to see how you can help us with this! Children will compare these toys with the toys they play with nowadays, discussing how they gave changed. Children will learn what a timeline is and place toys in chronological order.
Reading
Mondays – RWI books to be changed by an adult. Please could ALL reading wallets be put in the trays so that we can check who has earned a certificate.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – children can change their learning zone book (the one with the coloured sticker on). Please help them to have this book ready to change when they come into the classroom in the mornings. Thank you!
Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves (on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)- first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.
Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!
There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.
If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Love to Learn
We would like the children to speak to a grandparent (or a person of a similar age) about the toys they played with when they were young. If they have a photo of them playing with the toy or you can find a photo of it on the internet, please email this to Miss Hall or Mrs Cotton with a brief description of what it is and what it was used for. Many thanks!
Love to Learn books need to be returned on Wednesday each week.
