Weekly News! 6.9.24
Wow, what a wonderful first week in Year 2 we have had! We were so impressed with the children’s resilience and focus this week; they have been true superstars!
English and Read, Write Inc.
This week we have been getting used to our new English/RWI groups and have enjoyed meeting our new teachers! We have been practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also been continuing to use our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words, because we all know you can't fred a red! We have been working hard on our writing and making sure all our letters are formed correctly. In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and also some red words. Any practice with these would be wonderful!
In Mrs Winchcombe’s English group, we have been reading the story Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Book? The story of a boy who fell into a book . . . Now if you were going to fall into a book, a book of fairy tales would probably not be your first choice. Because in every story there is always a wicked this, an evil that or a hungry somebody. It could only happen to Herb!
This week we have been looking at making predictions, answering tricky comprehension questions and writing sentences, making sure they are punctuated correctly!
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
We will make a start at beginning to move children, when ready, on to Accelerated reader books, more information to follow soon.
Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
This week in Maths has been super exciting! We've been diving deep into number and place value, and let me tell you, it's been a blast. To kick things off, we brushed up on our skills of writing numbers in both numerals and words by creating our very own Chilton cheques – how cool is that?
We then moved on to counting within 100 by starting with groups of ten first. Trust me, it made counting so much easier and more enjoyable. And who knew Maths could be this fun? On Thursday, we got hands-on with base 10 and had a go at creating 2-digit numbers, using the base 10 blocks to show the tens and ones – it was like building with Maths!
To wrap up the week, we delved into partitioning 2-digit numbers, breaking them down into their tens and ones. It was mind-bogglingly awesome to see how numbers work in a whole new light.
Next week we will continue looking at place value.
PSHE
This week in PSHE, we have placed our focus on the theme 'One Childhood, One Chance'. Throughout the week, our students have engaged in various activities centred around important aspects of personal, social, and health education.
One of the key highlights included revisiting 'The Chilton Way' motto, which emphasises the values of being ready, respectful, and safe. We delved into the significance of adhering to rules to ensure our safety and well-being and collectively established classroom rules.
We dedicated time to explore the four fundamental Chilton Values: kindness, courage, equality, and respect. Through discussions and activities, students reflected on ways to embody these values in their daily lives and acknowledged their importance.
We delved into the Zones of Regulation, a framework that aids in understanding and managing emotions. Students learnt strategies to navigate through different zones effectively. Furthermore, we underscored the importance of social skills in maintaining safety. By sorting behaviours into appropriate and inappropriate categories, students grasped the essence of positive interactions and communication with others.
Next week we will be starting our brand-new thematic topic; Sow and Grow!
Times Tables Rockstars!
This week we will be sending home a letter with your child’s TTRS log in details. Unlike other years, this is purely for children to enjoy playing at home. We will be setting their timetables for 2, 5 and 10s to begin with. The aim is to increase their speed and knowledge of their timetables. Please introduce this to your child and have fun 😊
Love to Learn
This week we would for you to design the front of your home learning book. We would love this to represent you! This could include your favourite colour, favourite foods, favourite singer, your family, pets, favourite books. We want it to represent YOU 😊 Additionally, we would love you to log in and explore Times Tables Rockstars.
