One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 4.10.24

English

Throughout English this week, we have begun introducing ourselves to newspapers. We started the week by looking through newspapers and familiarising ourselves with the layout and the features. We then started to create our own newspaper report about Shackleton and his men returning home. We have written an introduction including the 5Ws and written our first paragraph, which was a recount of what happened on the expedition. Next week, we will be finishing our reports using direct and indirect speech.

Maths

This week in maths, we have been focussing on multiplication. We started the week by multiplying by 10,100 and 1000 using a place value slider. Moving on to multiplying 4 digits by 1 digit and then introducing multiplying 2 by 2-digit numbers. Next week, we will be continuing multiplying 2 digits by 2 digits and then moving on to division.

Thematic

Due to practising our harvest assembly this week, our thematic was finishing the topography of our mountain ranges that we had created. We used pictures of the mountain ranges to ensure we were using resources that matched the topography of our mountain ranges.

LOVE TO LEARN

LOVE TO LEARN this week is to find out all the vocabulary that is linked to division and then create your own poster to show the importance of the vocabulary.

Our Fact of the week this week has been 8 X 6  = 48 and our spelling rule has been spelling words with the suffix ibly.

To become a peer mediator you need to:

Write a letter to Mrs Winchcombe by next Friday (11th) telling her why you feel you would be a good peer mediator. Please can these be passed on to me.

What is a peer mediator:

  1. Peer mediators are clearly identified by their hoodies and work in pairs in their school playground to help children who are involved in a squabble but don’t know how to sort it out.

  2. The mediators encourage the children to talk about the problem openly and calmly and then come to a solution which is fair for all concerned.

What qualities will a peer mediator need:

A good listener

Empathetic

Non-judgemental

Discreet

Fair

Not bossy

Helpful in getting young people to find their own solutions to disputes.
