Maths

This week in maths we have been learning about measuring length and mass. We have learnt that length is measured in mm, cm, m or km and that 10mm = 1cm and 100cm = 1m. The children have measured lines and shapes using rulers and larger objects such as the classroom door using measuring tapes and metre rulers. We have gone over the meaning of width, length and height. We have learnt that 1m 34cm is the same as 134cm or 1.34m, and that 765cm = 7m and 65cm. We then moved on to measuring mass and we learnt that mass is measured in g, kg or tonnes and that 1000g = 1kg. We have looked at how to read the mass of something on a scale. We learnt how to work out what each interval on the scale is worth so that we could read the mass; we had scales going up in 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s, 20s, 25s, 50s, 100s, 150s, 200s and halves. The children really impressed us in this lesson - they were fantastic at reading the scales!

English

In English we have continued to learn about writing letters however this week we focussed on writing a formal letter. We have learnt how to use an appropriate greeting such as 'Dear SIr or Madam' and how to finish the letter with 'Yours sincerely' or 'Yours faithfully'. We have laid out our writing on the page correctly for a letter; putting the address on the top right followed by the date. The children have used both complex and compound sentences in their letters and looked at using formal language such as, 'I would like to inform you that...'.

Topic

This week we have been completing our Food Technology learning. The children have used their science knowledge of a balanced diet to plan and design a healthy pasta dish that contains the right amount of all of the food groups - carbohydrates, protein, dairy, fruit and vegetables, fats and oils. We then thoroughly enjoyed our lesson where we made our pasta salads. Here are some photos:

We are also going to evaluate our pasta salads and think about how well they fitted the brief of a balanced dish. We will think about how we would improve them if we were to eat them again. The pasta salads were very yummy and the children loved trying the food that they had prepared themselves.

Love to Learn

This week we would love you to make a Xmas decoration that we can use to decorate the classroom. Please can your decoration have a string or ribbon or something that we can use to hang them. Please bring your decorations in from Monday 13th December so that we can enjoy them in the classroom for the week.

Messages

A reminder of Christmas events this week:

- On Tuesday 14th December we will be holding our Christmas party in the afternoon. The children can come to school wearing party clothes but please ensure they have shoes suitable for playtime. Letters have been given out with details of party food if you would like to donate some. Many thanks to all who send in some food or drink for the party.

- Friday 17th December is Christmas jumper day - the children may come to school in their school uniform but swap their school jumper for a Christmas jumper. This is also the day of the Christmas school dinner. Fish finger day will be on Thursday 16th December.

- Please continue to complete the AR reading quizzes with your child after they have read each of their home reading books.

- School finishes at 2pm on Friday 17th December for the Xmas holidays.

Many thanks
