One Childhood, One Chance

Year 4 Weekly News 18.6.21

English

In English this week we have continued the text 'The Pebble in my Pocket: A History of Earth' by Meredith Hooper. The book tells us about the evolution of living things on Earth. Due to this, we linked our writing with how creatures of earth evolved over time. We continued to write explanation and information texts and used a variety of different skills to do this. Such as, the four different sentences types and using subordinating conjunctions to extend our ideas.

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning about length. The children have learnt that length is measure in millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres. They have learnt that 1km is the same as 1000m and used this knowledge to convert between the units of length.  At the beginning of the week, we estimated and measured objects in the classroom so that children got a feel and chance to actively have a go at measuring. Towards of the end of the week, we moved onto measuring the perimeter of shapes and finding the area of shapes.

Science

This week we have started a new topic for our science called ‘living things and their habitats’. Children have learnt about how to classify different plants using a classification key. They explored areas of the school to find deciduous and evergreen trees and flowering and non-flowering plants. On Tuesday, children learnt about how to classify different animals how to classify them. They did this by using vertebrates, non-vertebrates, reptiles, birds, fish, mammals and amphibians.

Love to Learn challenges

English

As throughout the week we were learning about the evolution of creatures over time and Friday we were looking at poetry. We would like the children to create a poem of their choice, it can be a Haiku, Tanka, free verse or rhyming poem about a creature that evolved of their choice.

Maths

We would like the children to draw three different shapes with three different perimeters. Remember to include the units and show the measurement of each side!

Messages

On Monday, the children will be going on a local beach walk to visit the rock pools to see what different living things they can find in their habitats. Can you please ensure all children bring trainers and are dressed suitably for the weather that day.

Sports day dates to remember! Year 4 – Monday 19th July 9:15.

Enjoy your weekend!
