Maths
This week in Maths, we developed our multiplication skills by learning how to use the grid method and short multiplication. We worked hard to break numbers into parts and organise our calculations clearly, helping us understand how multiplication works step by step. Next week, we will move on to division, where we will be focusing on sharing and grouping.

English
This week in English, we have been writing character descriptions of the Saucepan Man. We focused on using expanded noun phrases to add more detail, as well as exciting verbs and adverbs to make our writing more interesting and engaging for the reader. Next week, we will be writing a setting description. We will be focusing on using fronted adverbials and powerful adjectives to help create sensory descriptions, allowing the reader to clearly imagine the setting through sights, sounds, and feelings.

Thematic

In Thematic this week, we have been exploring maps to identify the counties of England and locate important Roman sites. This helped us to understand where key historical places are and how the Romans were connected to different parts of Britain.

Next week, we will be discovering facts about the Celts who lived in Britain before the Romans arrived. We will then move on to learn about the Roman invasion of Britain, including Julius Caesar’s attempt to invade in 55–54 BC. To support our learning, we will create a timeline of key events to help us understand the chronology of Roman rule in Britain.

The Viking Speaker Competition

Dear Chilton Families,

It is that time of year again that we will be holding the Viking Speaker Competition. The Speaker competition is an annual competition across the Viking Academy Trust that helps to develop children's Oracy skills. The children are invited to create and present a speech on a given theme. Four children will be chosen to represent the school, competing against children from Ramsgate Arts and Upton to become the Viking Speaker winner for 2026.

This year the children are invited to ‘Pitch their passion’. The idea is the children choose something they are passionate about. This could be anything from Climate Change to Capybaras; it may be a hobby they have or just something they find interesting. They need to write a speech that inspires the audience to take an interest in their chosen passion. The speech can be no longer that 2 minutes and the children cannot use any props or slides to help them during their speech.

To help the children with this competition, please could you support your child across half term to decide which passion they have that they might wish to ‘pitch’ in their speech. They need to consider what makes their passion so intriguing and why others should also take an interest in it. They can begin to make some notes or even create a first draft of their speech. They will then continue to work on their speech during the first week back in school after half term.

Those children that wish to enter the competition will perform their speech to their class during the week beginning 2nd March. Each class will choose one representative. We will then hold the Chilton Speaker Final on Friday 13th March, where our four Chilton representatives will be chosen. These four children will take part in the Viking Speaker Final on Friday 27th March.

Another great week of learning for Year 3 this week. Today we have absolutely loved celebrating NSPCC Number Day, thank you for the wonderful costumes you created!

Maths
We’ve had a great week in maths! This week, we’ve been learning all about 3D shapes. The children have been busy identifying different 3D shapes, sorting them using their properties (such as faces, edges, and vertices), and recognising shapes even when they are shown from different orientations. It’s been lovely to see how confident everyone is becoming when talking about shapes and explaining their thinking.

Next week, we’ll be moving on to fractions. We’ll be recognising, comparing, and ordering fractions, using practical resources and visual models to support understanding.

English
This week in English, we’ve been focusing on letter writing. The children have been learning how to use emotive language to engage the reader, as well as practising contractions to make their writing sound more natural and fluent. There has been some fantastic effort put into choosing words carefully and expressing feelings clearly.

Next week, we will continue to develop our letter writing skills, with a particular focus on using formal language. The children will learn how to adapt their writing for different purposes and audiences, and we’re excited to see their confidence continue to grow!

Thematic
This week in Thematic, we’ve been busy designing, creating, and evaluating levers and linkages. The children have enjoyed exploring how different mechanisms work and thinking carefully about what went well and what could be improved in their designs. There’s been lots of creativity, problem-solving, and great teamwork on show!

Next week, we’ll be completing our RE learning for the term. We will be exploring what different religious signs and symbols mean and why they are important to people of different faiths. It will be a thoughtful and interesting way to round off our learning this term.

We have enjoyed lots of exciting lessons, especially creating our own sunglasses.

Maths
In Maths this week, we have been learning all about mass. We have weighed a variety of items and compared the weights of different objects using grams and kilograms. Next week in maths, we will be learning all about capacity.

English
This week in English, we have created our own wintery setting, character, planned a five-part narrative as well as showing our story in a comic strip. What a busy week! Next week we will be writing our five-part narrative.

Thematic
We have had a wonderful week of Thematic learning, creating our own sunglasses, testing them and improving them. We found that having dark lenses worked the best and blocked the most UV light. Next week, we will be learning all about shadows and identifying the source of light and the item that is blocking the light.

Home Learning
For Love to Learn this week, we would like you to create your own winter scene that links to your narrative for next week. You can choose how you do this; you might want to draw your scene, create a 3D model, create it on AI or even paint your scene. We can’t wait to see what you create.

We have also sent home white bags to decorate for the Christmas fayre.

This week in Year 3, kindness has been the centre point of our learning; we have thought about ways in which we can show kindness and what to do if people are being unkind.

Maths
In Maths this week, we have explored statistics. We have recapped our knowledge of bar and tally charts and pictograms. This week, we have been writing character descriptions of the characters in our book The Green Ship. We have focused on writing about their appearance and personality. We finished the week by writing a character description of ourselves to Pudsey, explaining how kind we are. Next week, we will be writing narratives, with a focus on writing in the past tense and varying our sentence openers.

We have had a great week of learning PSHE, reminding ourselves of the people we can talk to in school and why we might need or want to share a problem. To end the week, we completed some acts of kindness challenges; we even sprinkled some kindness to the different adults around the school. Next week, we will continue our Thematic learning. We will be creating our own sunglasses; we will then test them and improve them.

We have learnt more about the Stone Age, and we have also worked really hard in all of our subjects.

Maths
In Maths, we have continued to develop our knowledge and understanding of subtraction. We all feel confident with column subtraction and using it to help us solve different problems. Next week, we will be learning about factors, as well as understanding how place value changes when multiplying by 10.

English
In English, we have continued to develop our knowledge of playscripts. We have written our own and included the appropriate punctuation and a variety of sentence openers. Next week, we will begin a new book, Lila and the Secret of Rain. We will be writing a diary entry, thinking about how we can show emotion.

Thematic
In Thematic this week, we have learnt about culture and how ceramics were a huge part of life during the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. We have also learnt about the change in technology throughout the prehistoric eras. Next week, we will begin our learning by taking a trip down to Pegwell to have a go at flint knapping and completing some challenges linked to the different stones and rocks that we find. We will then work on our Oracy task for the term, discussing our trip with other children in Year 3, before finishing the week with an end-of-term Thematic quiz.

Graham, from Monkton Nature Reserve, came to speak to us all about rocks. He brought along a variety of fascinating specimens and explained how they were formed. The highlight was getting to see – and even hold – a real dinosaur bone! At Monkton Nature Reserve, there is also a museum where you can discover even more exciting artefacts.

In Maths, we have been learning how to use column addition. We focused carefully on “one digit, one box” and made sure we kept the correct place value columns. Next week, we will be moving on to subtraction, starting with finding the difference before using number bonds to subtract mentally.

English
This week in English, we wrote our own non-fiction texts all about Stone Age food. We learned how to use subheadings, included compound sentences, and began to explore complex sentences. Next week, we will move on to playscripts. We will begin by identifying the features of a playscript before having a go at writing our own.

Our Thematic learning this week was centred around science. We began with the exciting visit from Monkton Nature Reserve, where we explored a range of rocks and even handled a dinosaur bone! Later in the week, we learned all about fossils, discovering the difference between body fossils and trace fossils. To finish, we had lots of fun creating our very own trace fossils. Next week, we will recap the achievements from Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. We will then go on to explore farming in the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age.
