It is hard to believe that it is nearly the Easter break and that the children will then be entering the last two terms in Year 4. They have been working incredibly hard and producing excellent work this week. We have been enjoying writing newspaper reports, making a moving or light up picture in Technology and using the 24 digital clock. Here is what we’ve been up to in more detail…

Maths

In maths this week, we have been learning about time. We started the week learning how to use 24 hour digital time e.g. 17:30 is the same as 5.30pm, 21:40 is the same as 9:40pm and 04:55 is the same as 4.55am. We matched these 24 hour digital times with analogue times on clock faces, and drew the hands on empty clock faces. We then moved on to converting units of time e.g. How many minutes are there in 6 hours? How many days in 6 weeks? How many months in 8 years? 4 minutes = _____ seconds, 8.5 hours = _____ minutes. The children did incredibly well with this. We also use the song ‘30 days has September’ to help us remember how many days are in each month – many of the children didn’t know this song so if you get a chance to practice at home, that would be very helpful (if you don’t know it yourself you can find it on you tube).

Next week we will be learning about position and direction again, and learning to plot points on a grid to draw a polygon and then how to translate the whole shape on the grid.

English

In English this week we have been learning about how to write newspaper reports. We identified the features of a good report and then started to learn these skills ourselves. We have learnt how to write a snappy headline and an introduction. We then used time conjunctions to start our sentences in our main story section of our newspaper reports, ensuring we retold the events in chronological order e.g. After that, Immediately, A few minutes later, Just then, Moments later, The next day. A trickier one that we tried to use was Meanwhile. Next, we learnt how to include quotes in a news report using direct speech and reported speech. We have also focussed on ensuring we were writing in the past tense consistently and using the correct past tense verbs.

Next week we will continue to learn some more skills for newspaper reporting and then write our showpiece.

Thematic

In Technology this week, we designed and made a picture that had a moving part or light up part, or both. We designed the picture and the electrical circuit that we would need, and thought about materials and tools we would need. Then we made our pictures in groups using the electrical components that we had learnt about in science last week. The light up/moving pictures that were created were amazing. Have a look below…

We have started our RE for this term too this week. We are learning about Christianity and the build up to Jesus’ arrest and death on the cross. We found out about Palm Sunday and wrote in role as either Jesus or one of the members of the crowd when he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.

Next week we will continue to learn about why Christians celebrate Easter.

Spellings

Spellings to learn this week are:

echo, scheme, chorus, character, ache, chaos, stomach, chemistry, orchestra, technology

RED WORDS: possible, potatoes, pressure

Love to Learn

Your Love to Learn challenge this week is a science challenge. As we have been learning about electrical insulators and electrical conductors, we would like you to make a poster about this. Your poster should show which materials conduct electricity and which materials are insulators. It should explain what the words conductor and insulator mean and explain how insulators can keep us safe around electricity. You can include pictures on your poster too.

Please hand in this home learning task by Wednesday 1st April.

Please continue to read at home at least 4 times a week and play TTRS as often as possible.

It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 4, with lots of great learning taking place across the curriculum.

Maths

This week in maths, we have been focusing on decimal numbers. The children have recapped their understanding of tenths and hundredths, and have worked hard on converting, comparing and ordering decimals. We ended the week with a fun, practical session outside, where the children solved decimal problems on the playground—applying their learning in a more active way.

Next week, we will be moving on to time, where we will be learning how to read, write and convert between 12-hour and 24-hour time.

English

In English, we have continued developing our persuasive writing skills. The children have been using compound and complex sentences, along with rhetorical questions and short, snappy sentences to make their writing more effective and engaging.

Next week, we will begin a new unit on newspaper reports, where the children will learn how to write in a formal style and report on events clearly.

Thematic

In our thematic learning, we have continued our science topic on electricity and circuits. This week, the children added switches to their simple circuits and carried out an investigation to identify which materials are conductors and which are insulators. They showed great curiosity and teamwork during this practical work.

Next week, we will be moving on to Design and Technology, where the children will begin designing and creating their own toy—we are looking forward to seeing their creativity!

Spellings

Spellings to learn this week are:

swimming, digging, clapping, dropping, wrapping, cutting, chatting, knitting, forgetting, slamming

Challenge words: travelling, beginning, controlling, patrolling, permitting

RED WORDS position, possess and possession

Love to Learn

Your Love to Learn challenge this week is to write a persuasive piece of writing about something you are passionate about. It could be introducing a new lesson into school, not wearing uniform or having a class pet. It is up to you!

Please continue to read at home at least 4 times a week and play TTRS as often as possible.

Maths

In maths this week, we have been learning about volume and capacity. We learnt to read the scales on measuring containers such as beakers and measuring cylinders. The scales went in different increments, such as 1s, 2s, 10s, 5s, 20s, 50s, 100s or 200s, and some of the increments were not labelled on the scales. We learnt that 1000ml is equal to 1 litre and used this knowledge to convert between units of volume e.g. 3000ml = _____l, ½ litre = _______ml, 8500ml = ____________. We also converted volumes so that we could compare the or put them in order e.g. Compare 6l and 4500ml using a comparison sign, 4500ml = 4 ½ l so 6l > 4 ½ l.

Next week we will be learning to round, order and compare decimal numbers.

English

In English this week we have been learning about how to write persuasive texts. We identified the features of a good persuasive text in Mrs Cousins’ persuasive writing that tried to convince us that cats are the best pet ever! We then started to learn the skills ourselves. We have learnt to use modal verbs (should, must, would, ought to, may, will), use superlatives (bravest, cutest, most adventurous, most confident, most interesting, best, worst, tastiest, kindest) and to use persuasive phrases such as ‘I strongly believe that..’, ‘It is clear to see that…’, ‘Obviously,..’ and ‘Without a doubt…’

Next week we will continue to learn some more skills that help us to be very persuasive.

Thematic

In history this week, we learnt about the difference between primary and secondary sources of historical evidence. We looked at some sources of evidence about the Golden Age of Islam and worked out if they were primary or secondary sources.

We then began our science learning for this unit and learnt about appliances that use electricity and whether they convert electrical energy into light, sound, movement (kinetic) or heat (thermal) energy. We then learnt about simple electrical circuits and electrical components such as batteries (cells), wires with crocodile clips, bulbs and buzzers. We learnt how to draw a circuit diagram using the correct symbols for the components.

Here we are enjoying making electrical circuits, including making the bulb light and the buzzer go off!

Next week we will learn about switches in circuits and investigate which materials conduct electricity.

Spellings

Spellings to learn this week are:

smiling saving announcing invading making encoding nudging exercising

English
This week in English, we have continued writing diary entries based on our class text The Boy at the Back of the Class. The children have worked hard to write in the style of a diary, imagining how the characters might be feeling and expressing these thoughts clearly. We have focused on using emotive language to show feelings, informal language to match the diary style, and a range of sentence openers to make our writing more interesting. The children have also been practising writing complex sentences to add extra detail and explanation.
Next week, we will be moving on to persuasive writing, where the children will learn how to present strong opinions and support their ideas with convincing reasons.

Maths
In maths this week, we have been learning about coordinates. The children now understand that when reading coordinates we start with the x-axis (across) and then move to the y-axis (up). They have practised locating and plotting points on a grid and have also learned how to translate points, moving them around the grid by following given instructions.
Next week, we will begin learning about volume and capacity, exploring how much liquid different containers can hold and comparing different amounts.

Thematic
In thematic lessons, we have continued exploring our topic: The Golden Age of Islam. This week we learned about several important inventors and scholars from this time period and discovered how their ideas and inventions helped shape the modern world. The children then compared life and developments during the Golden Age of Islam with what was happening in England during the Dark Ages, helping them understand how different parts of the world were developing at the same time.

LOVE TO LEARN

For your love to learn this week, can you create a diary entry about a day you have had in your life. Inlcude emotive language, sentences starters, informal language and complex sentences. Write as yourself!

Spellings

Spellings to learn this week for a test on Thursday are:

Expression

Discussion

Confession

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning about statistics. We have learnt to interpret data in tables, line graphs, bar graphs and pictograms. The children tackled sum and comparison questions including finding the difference between some of the sets of data.

Next week, we are learning about coordinates and translation.

English

In English we have started to read our new book called 'The Boy at the Back of the Class'. Our first writing genre this term is diary entries and this week we have learnt about the features of a good diary entry and learnt how to use emotive language in one. We wrote in role as if we were one of the characters from the story.

Next week, we will be continuing to learn how to write diary entries, learning to include complex sentences and fronted adverbials,

Thematic

We started our new themed learning unit this week called 'Innovation Station'. To kick off this unit we are learning some history and finding out about a period of time called the Golden Age of Islam. The children found out that the Islamic Golden Age began in 750CE and the centre of the empire was Bagdad in Iraq. At this time, Baghdad was one of the most advanced cities in the world and many important scientific, mathematical, medical and astrological discoveries and inventions were made, including algebra. The children made some incredible fact files about the Golden Age of Islam, using their skills learnt in English to create some excellent non-chronological reports. In our second lesson we learnt about one of the most creative men from the Islamic Golden Age called Ibn Al-Haythem. He was one of the first scientists to make important discoveries about optics and developed the camera obscura. After finding out about him, we made our own pinhole cameras. here we are making them...

Well done to all the children for all of their hard work and kindness this term. Here is what we have been up this week…

Maths

In maths this week, we have been learning to about fractions and decimals. We have been learning that the place value column after the ones column is the tenths column, then the hundredths column, and that there is a decimal point between the ones and the tenths. The children have learnt the decimal equivalents of tenths and hundredths e.g. 1/10 = 0.1, 2/10 = 0.2 etc and 7/100 = 0.07 and 53/100 = 0.53. We also learnt the decimal equivalents for ¼, ½ and ¾. These are important maths facts to learn so please practice with your child at home:

¼ = 0.25          ½ = 0.5         ¾ = 0.75

We also learnt to divide a whole number by 10 or 100, finding out that the answer will be a decimal number. E.g. 43 ÷ 10 = 4.3, 9 ÷10 = 0.9, 83 ÷ 100 = 0.83.

After half term, we will be interpreting bar graphs, pictograms, time graphs and learning to understand data presented in tables.

English

In English this week we finished reading ‘Pebble in my Pocket: A History of Earth’ by Meredith Hooper. We wrote poems based on this text this week learning to use figurative language in poetry. We have learnt to use similes, superlatives, metaphors and personification in our poems.

After half term we will begin reading our new text called ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ and our first writing genre will be learning to write diary entries using emotive language.

RE

In RE this week, we having being learning about Hindu worship. We found out about the Gods and Goddesses that Hindus worship and about how they worship both in the mandir and at home. The children learnt about puja and shrines.

In term 4, we will kick off the term learning with some PSHE learning, finding out about British Values and the 9 protected characteristics. We will then start our new themed learning unit called ‘Innovation Station’ where we will learn about the Golden Age of Islam and electricity.

Spellings

After half term we will be learning the spellings that were on the blog last week plus some more (see below). These spellings are all homophones and the children will need to know which spelling is used for which word.

hear, here, piece, peace, bored, board, berry, bury, medal, meddle, threw, through, plain, plane, bear, bare, aloud, allowed, tail, tale, hour, our, which, witch, main, mane, flower, flour, knot, knight, blew, whole, hole, waste, waist

Challenge words - weather, whether, father, farther, morning, mourning, aisle

Love to Learn

Your Love to Learn challenge for over the half term is to find out about an invention that interests you. Maybe you could find out who invented the telephone, the television, the computer, the internet, the train or car, or whatever you would like to find out about! You could write an information page or make a poster about what you find out.

Please hand in this home learning task by Wednesday 25th February.

Please continue to read at home at least 4 times a week and play TTRS as often as possible.

The Viking Speaker Competition

Dear Chilton Families,

It is that time of year again that we will be holding the Viking Speaker Competition. The Speaker competition is an annual competition across the Viking Academy Trust that helps to develop children's Oracy skills. The children are invited to create and present a speech on a given theme. Four children will be chosen to represent the school, competing against children from Ramsgate Arts and Upton to become the Viking Speaker winner for 2026.

This year the children are invited to ‘Pitch their passion’. The idea is the children choose something they are passionate about. This could be anything from Climate Change to Capybaras; it may be a hobby they have or just something they find interesting. They need to write a speech that inspires the audience to take an interest in their chosen passion. The speech can be no longer that 2 minutes and the children cannot use any props or slides to help them during their speech.

To help the children with this competition, please could you support your child across half term to decide which passion they have that they might wish to ‘pitch’ in their speech. They need to consider what makes their passion so intriguing and why others should also take an interest in it. They can begin to make some notes or even create a first draft of their speech. They will then continue to work on their speech during the first week back in school after half term.

Those children that wish to enter the competition will perform their speech to their class during the week beginning 2nd March. Each class will choose one representative. We will then hold the Chilton Speaker Final on Friday 13th March, where our four Chilton representatives will be chosen. These four children will take part in the Viking Speaker Final on Friday 27th March.

We look forward to learning all about what our children are passionate about.

English
In English, we continued writing our non-chronological reports about different eras of time, inspired by the book A Pebble in My Pocket. The children worked hard to organise their information clearly and to apply the writing skills we have been developing over the past few weeks. We focused particularly on using commas in a list, and the children also created labelled diagrams and captions to present information effectively. It has been wonderful to see their growing confidence in both writing and presentation.

Maths
This week was our “Ditch the Books” week, so all of our maths learning took place without exercise books. The children took part in practical and outdoor activities to deepen their understanding. We have been learning to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, solve problems involving fractions, and find equivalent fractions, including tenths and hundredths. The hands-on approach really helped the children to visualise their learning and explain their reasoning.

In our thematic learning, we focused on Design and Technology. The children learnt about frame and shell structures, exploring how they are designed and what makes them strong and stable. They then planned, made and evaluated their own shell structures. It was fantastic to see their creativity and problem-solving skills in action, as well as their thoughtful evaluations about what worked well and what they would improve next time. Here we are making our frame structures...

In maths this week, we have been learning to divide. We have been practising using short division (the bus stop method) to divide 2 and 3 digit numbers. We then used this method to help us solve 2 step word problems involving division e.g.

Mrs Cousins has 96 rubbers. She shares them equally between 6 tables. The Mrs Jewell gives each table, 15 more rubbers. How many rubbers does each table have then?

Next week, we will be learning to add and subtract fractions, solve problems involving fractions and, of course, having great number fun all day on Friday when it is Number Day at school.

English

In English this week we have started to read a new text called ‘Pebble in my Pocket: A History of Earth’ by Meredith Hooper. Using this text, we are learning how to write a non-chronological report. We began by looking at what a good non-chronological report should look like and identified the features used. We learnt how to use technical vocabulary, how to maintain past tense throughout, and how to include complex sentences and compound sentences in a non-chronological report.

Next week we will continue reading ‘Pebble in my Pocket’ and learn some more skills needed for a non-chronological report; labelled diagrams and pictures with captions, writing statements, exclamation sentences and questions, and using commas in lists. The children will then start their showpiece, which will be a non-chronological report about the Ancient Egyptians.

Thematic

This week, we have continued our geography learning in our themed unit called ‘Cracking the Earth’s Core’. We have continued our study of Italy and the UK. We have learnt about the 8 points of a compass and used these to write statements about places in Italy e.g. North of Rome is Perugia, south-east of Mt Calvo is Mt Vesuvius. We have located Italy and the UK on a map of Europe along with other countries such as France, Spain, Germany and Poland. On a map of the world, we labelled the equator, lines of Capricorn and Cancer and the Greenwich Meridian line. We also located and labelled the 7 continents. In our last lesson, the children learnt how to use 4-figure grid references to describe where locations are on a map.

Well done for another fantastic week in Year 4!

English
This week in English, our Year 4 writers have been busy retelling the story Fly Eagle Fly! They practised using paragraphs, dialogue, and complex sentences, making their stories exciting and full of detail. The children have done a brilliant job showing their creativity and improving their writing skills.

Next week, we are starting a brand-new book called Pebble in My Pocket. We will be learning all about non-chronological reports, exploring features like headings, subheadings, and factual language. The children will get the chance to research and write their own reports, sharing interesting facts in their own words.

Maths
This week in Maths, we have been multiplying using the distributive law and associative law, helping us solve bigger multiplication problems with confidence. The children have been reasoning through their answers and explaining their methods clearly.

Next week, we are moving on to division. We will be learning the bus stop method to divide 3-digit numbers by regrouping. We will also solve two-step problems that combine division, addition, and subtraction – putting our problem-solving skills to the test!

Thematic
In Thematic this week, we explored earthquakes! The children learnt about the five deadly features of earthquakes and thought about how they can affect people living in different areas. We also compared the geography of Italy and the UK, spotting similarities and differences.

Next week, we will continue with map work, comparing the UK, Italy, and Europe. The children will practise using compass points to explore locations and improve their geographical skills.

We have been expert scientists this week and have been bird watching and researching different birds that we found in the playground.

Love to learn

For Love to learn this week, we would like children to create a poster on either volcanoes or earthquakes. It must have information about what they are and include the deadly features of each one. Make it as colourful and as inviting as possible!

Spellings

Next weeks spellings are words with the prefix il and words with the 'c' sound but spelt with que.

Illegal, illogical, illegible, mosque, unique, antique, technique, cheque, guard, grammar and group.

English

In English, we have been learning how to write character descriptions. We have practised our skills by describing the farmer and the eagle from our story. The children have learnt to use expanded noun phrases and similes to describe their characters, and also about the importance of varying nouns and pronouns to avoid repetition.

In Reading for Pleasure this week, the children loved reading some children's magazines from the library. Here we are enjoying them...

Next week, we will be writing a 5 part story and learning how to write dialogue, compound sentences and complex sentences in our stories.

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning to add and subtract mentally. The children have been using rounding to the nearest 10 or 100 to round both of the numbers in the calculation and then quickly adding or subtracting these in their heads to get a rough answer. We then used the column method to find the actual exact answer and see how close our estimates were. E.g. 367 + 124 = 367 rounds to 370 and 124 rounds to 120 so a rough answer would be 490. We have also been using the inverse to check answers e.g. if 736 - 284 = 452, then we can do 452 + 284 and we should get 736 if we have done the subtraction correctly.

Next week we will be learning to multiply. We will be multiplying 3 single digit numbers and 2 digit by 1 digit mentally.

Thematic

This week we have begun our new topic 'Cracking the Earth's Core', and the children have been highly engaged and seem to be loving this themed learning already. We have learnt about the layers of the Earth; the crust, mantle, outer core and inner core. We have found out that the crust is not one solid piece but is split into large slabs called tectonic plates. We then found out about how volcanoes are formed and why they occur, and drew a labelled a cross section of a volcano. To finish off the week, we found out about the 5 deadly features of a volcanic eruption; lava flow, volcanic ash, volcanic bombs, mud slides and pyroclastic flows.

Next week, we will find out why people choose the live near volcanoes and finding out about earthquakes.

Love to Learn

This week's home learning task is an English one. In English, we have been learning to describe characters using expanded noun phrases and similes. Choose one of the pictures below and write a description of the characters using the skills you have learnt in class. Try to think about using interesting sentence openers too. You could draw a picture of the characters to go with your writing too if you'd like to!

Spellings

There are 20 spellings to learn this week as we are revising spellings that the children have already learnt, so although there may seem like a lot, they have already learnt all of these before. This is a chance to practice them again.

unable, unhappy, unlucky, untidy, undo, dislike, disown, disagree, disappear, disinfect, misbehave, miscount, misheard, misread, mistake, invisible, incomplete, inhuman, incorrect, independent

TTRS BATTLE

A battle between Year 3 and Year 4 starts on Monday 19th January and finishes on Friday. Please play as much TTRS as you can at home to help support your year group!

RSPB Big Garden BirdWatch

This term, the whole school is taking part in the Big Schools' BirdWatch to collect data for the RSPB. We are inviting you to take part at home too. Here's what you need to do:

They have really impressed us with their attitudes towards their learning and have all worked so hard all week! Well done Year 4!

Here is what we have been up this week…

Maths

In maths this week, we have been learning some more about place value and number. We have been learning to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000. E.g. 73 rounded to the nearest 10 is 70, 325 rounded to the nearest 100 is 300, 6584 rounded to the nearest 1000 is 7000. The children learnt that if rounding to the nearest ten, they need to look at the ones digit, if rounding to the nearest 100, they need to look at the tens digit and if rounding to the nearest 1000, they need to look at the hundreds digit. We also learnt about negative numbers. The children learnt that numbers continue below zero like this 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, -1, -2,-3, -4 etc and that these numbers start with a minus sign. Some of us tried calculations involving negative numbers e.g. 9 – 14 =. We finished off the week solving mixed place value problems involving representing numbers using place value counters and base ten, partitioning numbers, rounding numbers and negative numbers.

Next week, we will be adding and subtracting. The children will learn that they can round the numbers before adding or subtracting to get a rough estimate of what the answer will be. They will also learn that they can use the inverse operation to check if an answer is correct.

English

In English this week we have been reading our new text ‘Fly Eagle Fly’, a traditional tale from Africa. Our first text type that we have been learning to write this week is setting descriptions. The children have learnt to use expanded noun phrases to describe parts of the setting e.g. the peachy-brown, tall reeds, the scorching, blazing hot sun, the squelchy, chocolate-brown mud. They have also used prepositions to show where the things are in the setting e.g. on, next to, beneath, beyond, above, in, between, opposite. We finished off the week learning how to use verbs and adverbs to describe parts of the setting.

Next week we will continue reading ‘Fly Eagle Fly’ and learn how to write a good character description.

PSHE

In PSHE this week we have been learning about courage. Our Champion of Courage for Year 4 this term is Alan Turing who cracked the enigma code in World War 2. The children learnt about how he was courageous and how he can inspire us to be brave and not be scared to be ourselves. The children have also learnt about setting goals for the future and how to make an action plan to help us to reach our goals. Some of the key vocabulary we have used this week are; persevere, resilience, motivation, goal, setback, achievement, strategy.

Next week, we will be starting our new thematic unit called ‘Cracking the Earth’s Core’, in which we will be learning about volcanoes and earthquakes.

Spellings

Spellings to learn this week for a test on Thursday 15th January are:

division, invasion, confusion, decision, collision, television, revision, erosion, explosion, material, mention, medicine

Love to Learn

For this week’s home learning task we would like you to find out about a volcano and make a fact file about it. You could make your fact file on the computer, write about it or make a video presentation and email it to your teacher. Try to find out where in the world the volcano is, any cities or towns nearby, if it is still erupting, how tall it is and any other interesting facts you can find! Despite the rainy weather, we have begun our Christmas festivities with a wonderful Christmas Fair, lots of Christmas poetry and many a practice for the Christmas Church performance!

English

In English we have been learning to use rhyming patterns in our poetry. We had another try at using rhyming couplets and the children did fantastically well. We then had a try at writing poems with an ABAB rhyming structure; this was quite tricky but the children amazed us yet again and wrote some incredible poems.

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning about mass. Using the key knowledge that 1kg is equal to 1000g, the children converted between units e.g. 3000g = 3kg, 7500g = 7 1/2 kg or 9 1/4 kg = 9250kg. We also solved word problems that involved converting units of mass. Next week we will be doing some Christmas problem solving.

RE

In RE this week we have been learning about Christianity and the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. We found out about the 3 wise men and the shepherds who visited Jesus after he was born, and we made some fantastic collages of the 3 wise men. Here are some of the collages we made...

Maths

In maths this week, we have been learning about measuring length. We began by estimating the length of items in cm and mm and then learnt how to measure accurately with a ruler to the nearest mm e.g. the felt tip pen was 6.2cm. We then learnt how to convert between units of length, cm to m, m to cm, m to km and km to m. Our key knowledge was that 1km = 1000m and that 1m = 100cm. Using this the children solved problems such as 5km = ? m, 250cm = ? m. We then learnt about perimeter for the first time. The children found the perimeter of rectilinear shapes but adding up the total measurements of the sides of the shape.

Next week, we will be learning about how to find the area of a shape by counting squares and then learning about mass, including converting between units of mass and comparing masses.

English

In English this week we have been writing poetry. We have learnt about and written different forms of poetry. These are haiku, tanka, acrostic poems and limericks. In haiku and tanka poems the children had to stick to a set syllable pattern e.g. a haiku poem has 3 lines, line one has 5 syllables, line 2 has 7 and line 3 has 5 syllables. In our acrostic poems we had a go at writing rhyming couplets where two lines of the poem rhyme, then the next two rhyme etc e.g.

Soft snow falling all around,

Noone makes a sound,

On the lake of frozen ice,

We skate around it’s so nice.

In a limerick there is a set rhythm and rhyme pattern and the children did amazingly well writing their own. One of our faves was…

There once was a sprout called Jim,

Nobody wanted to eat him,

He disguised as a carrot,

Nearly got eaten by a parrot,

And then he got thrown in the bin!

Next week we will writing some more rhyming poems and learning to use similes in our poetry.

Thematic

In thematic this week we have been learning some science. We have learnt about the digestive system and what each part of it does e.g. the stomach contains acid that further mushes up the food and in the small intestines the nutrients go into the blood to be carried around the body. We have also learnt about food chains and the key vocabulary producer, prey and predator. We have found out the arrows in a food chain show the flow of energy (not what eats what) and we also learnt about what happens if something changes in a food chain e.g. one of the animals dies off.

We have also been busy making some hot chocolate reindeer sachets that will be on sale at the Christmas fair on Wednesday so please do come along and try and buy one!

Next week, will be RE week and we will be learning about Christianity and why Christians celebrate Christmas.

Spellings

There are no spellings to learn this week.

Love to Learn

For this week’s home learning task we would like you to make a Christmas decoration that we can use to decorate the classroom. Please bring in your decoration by Wednesday 10th December.

The children have been working so hard, especially on their own stories, that we have been writing in English and battling hard on TTRS in the class tournament. Here is what we have been up to…

Maths

In maths this week, we have been learning some more about shape. We have learnt about different types of quadrilaterals; square, oblong, trapezium, parallelogram, rhombus and irregular quadrilaterals. We found out the properties of each of these 2D shapes e.g. a parallelogram has 4 straight sides, no right angles and 2 sets of parallel sides and a trapezium has only 1 set of parallel sides, no right angles and 4 straight sides. We then went on to learn about 3D shapes. We learnt to name and describe 3D shapes using maths vocabulary such as vertices, faces and edges. The 3D shapes we learnt about are cone, cylinder, sphere, hemi-sphere, cube, cuboid, tetrahedron (aka triangular based pyramid), square based pyramid, triangular prism, pentagonal prism and hexagonal prism. Some of us learnt about octagonal prisms, and pentagonal and hexagonal based pyramids. Here we are having great fun making 3D shapes...

English

In English this week we planned and wrote our own 5 part fantasy stories. We made sure our stories had these 5 parts; beginning, problem, build up, problem solved and ending. We described the setting that our story took place in and described the characters. We used dialogue between our characters to show what they are like.

Next week we will move on to learn how to create imagery in poetry using alliteration, onomatopoeia and personification, which are all figurative language techniques.

Thematic

In ‘Walk like an Egyptian’ this week we have learnt about the role the pyramids played in Ancient Egypt and about hieroglyphics. We have also been learning about primary and secondary sources of historical evidence, and about whether sources of evidence are reliable or not.

Next week, we will be finding out about the significant contributions the Ancient Egyptians made to architecture and art.

This week’s home learning task is science. We will be learning about food chains in a few weeks. Find out what a food chain is and write some in your Love to Learn book. Find out what these words mean and try to label them on your food chains: predator, prey, producer, consumer. You could draw pictures of the living things in your food chains, or you could create your food chains on a computer and add in photos that you find. However you choose to present your learning, we can’t wait to see it.

Next week, we will be extending our learning into quadrilaterals before moving on to 3D shapes, where the children will start to visualise and describe shapes in three dimensions.

English

In English, we continued our work on Ice Palace, using the story to inspire our writing. The focus this week was on creating suspense. The children practised using short, snappy sentences, fronted adverbials, rhetorical questions and the technique of show not tell to draw readers in and build tension. They produced some wonderfully atmospheric writing!

Next week, we will be bringing these skills together as we begin to write our own five-part narratives, using Ice Palace as a model for structure and excitement.

PSHE

Our PSHE lessons have centred on the important themes of bullying and kindness. The children learned what bullying is, how to recognise it and how we can work together to prevent it. We also talked about what we can do in the future if we or someone else needs support.

Alongside this, we discussed the importance of being kind to others and also showing kindness to ourselves—a key skill for wellbeing and resilience.

We have had another brilliant week in Year 4. Here is what we have been up to…

Maths

In maths this week, we have been learning some more about fractions. We have learnt how to find fractions of numbers/amounts. For example, 3/5 of 45 =

The first thing to do is divide 45 by the denominator 5, so 45 ÷ 5 = 9. Then multiply by the numerator, the 3, so 9x3 = 27. So 3/5 of 45 is 27.

We have also been comparing and ordering fractions. We discovered that the larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction actually is e.g. 1/12 is smaller than 1/5. We compared fractions using the comparison signs e.g. 1/7 > 1/10.

We also found out that when the denominator is the same, the greater the numerator is, the bigger the fractions is e.g. Put 2/8, 4/8, 1/8 and 7/8 in order from lowest to highest. The answer would be 1/8, 2/8, 4/8, 7/8.

Next week, we will be learning about 2D shapes.

English

In English this week we finished learning about how to describe settings by learning how to use personification, similes and metaphors. We then moved on to learn about how to describe characters in the beginning of our 5 part stories. In the past, the children have learnt to show what a character is like by just describing what they look like or what their personality is like. In this writing unit, they are learning to infer what the characters are like by by what they say. This week, they have learnt to choose speech verbs and adverbs to show what characters are like e.g. for a bad character we may use ‘hissed angrily’ or ‘shouted fiercely’, whereas for a good character we may choose ‘confidently cried’ or ‘ bravely stated’. We also learnt to show what the characters are like by what they actually say, and we recapped how to use speech punctuation including inverted commas.

Next week we will move on to learning how to write the next part of a 5 part story, the ‘build up’ section and we will learn how to create suspense in our writing.

Thematic

In ‘Walk like an Egyptian’ this week we learnt about the social hierarchy of the Ancient Egyptian civilisation and that they were ruled by pharaohs who had supreme control over everything. We found out about Ancient Egyptian Gods and Goddesses. We have also learnt about the mummification process and thoroughly enjoyed mummifying a tomato! Here we are doing this…

Spellings

This week’s spellings are words that start with the prefix inter-. These are the spellings to learn for a test on Thursday 13th November:

Maths

This week, we’ve been exploring equivalent fractions. The children have done brilliantly at identifying and shading fractions that are equal, and they’ve been using multiplication and division to find and check their equivalents. It’s been great to see how confidently they can now explain why two fractions are the same!
Next week, we’ll be moving on to finding fractions of amounts and comparing fractions, which will build on all the great work we’ve done so far.

English

We have started our brand new book, Ice Palace, which has really captured the children’s imaginations! This week, we’ve focused on using expanded noun phrases, verbs, and adverbs to describe the beautiful but mysterious wintry scenes from the story. The children have created some truly atmospheric descriptions.
Next week, we’ll continue to develop our descriptive writing by exploring similes, metaphors, and personification to make our writing even more powerful.

Our new topic has begun! The children have loved diving into the world of Ancient Egypt. This week, we looked at where Ancient Egypt fits within other eras of history and discussed just how important the River Nile was to the Egyptian people.
Next week, we’ll be finding out all about Pharaohs and the gods and goddesses the Ancient Egyptians worshipped — a topic the children are already very excited about!

It’s hard to believe 7 weeks have passed. Team Aqua and Team Topaz have settled into Year 4 so well and we’ve had a brilliant term with them! Here is what we have been up to this week…

Maths

In maths this week, we have been learning to tell the time. We started by telling the time on analogue clocks e.g. 10 minutes to 6, 20 minutes past 8, quarter to 7. Some of the children did this to the nearest minute e.g. 23 minutes past 8, 16 minutes to 11. We then moved on to digital time, and being able to match the digital time to analogue times and vice versa. The children were excellent at this when the minute hand was on the ‘past’ side of the clock e.g. 10 minutes past 5 = 05:10, 25 minutes past 8 = 08:25. If the minute hand was on the ‘to’ side of the clock, the children found this a little trickier so any practice they can do with this at home would be amazing e.g. 20 minutes to 6 = 05:40, 5 minutes to 12 = 11.55.

We will move on to 24-hour digital time later in the year.

After half term we will be learning about fractions.

English

In English this week we finished reading ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. The children enjoyed the ending where the people of the world became more peaceful and wars ended! We learnt some more skills needed to write an information text this week, using cause and effect conjunctions and using commas in lists. Some cause and effect conjunctions that we used were; for this reason, as a result of this, since, because of this, due to the fact that, as a consequence of this. We then planned and wrote our 'showpiece' for information texts, an information sheet about tigers.

After half term we will begin reading our new book called Ice Palace and learn about how to write a 5-part narrative (story).

RE

In RE this week, we have been learning about Sikh rites of passage. We began by finding out key facts about Sikhism. Then we found out about Sikh naming ceremonies, Sikh weddings and Sikh funerals. We also found out about Sikh’s beliefs in life after death and reincarnation.

After half term we will begin our next themed curriculum unit called ‘Walk like an Egyptian’. In this unit we will be covering history and science learning. We will find out all about the Ancient Egyptian civilisation, and about the digestive system and food chains.

Spellings

We really enjoyed one of our spelling lessons this week where we made ‘spelling tablecloths’. The children covered large pieces of paper in the words we learnt this week in lots of different colours. They looked great. Here we are doing this…

This week’s spellings are red words (words that can be trickier to sound out or can’t be sounded out). These are the spellings to learn for a test on Thursday 30th October:

people, beautiful, because, before, climb, everything, everybody, again, whole, many, would, shouldn't, different, describe

Love to Learn

Over the half term, we would like you to find out about one of these things to do with Ancient Egyptians. Please find out about either:

Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics

Ancient Egyptian pyramids

Ancient Egyptian mummification

Ancient Egyptian Gods and Goddesses

You can choose how you would like to present what you find out. Some ideas could be writing an information sheet, drawing labelled pictures or making a video telling us about what you found out and emailing it to your teacher (emails below).

The children have been working incredibly hard across all subjects, showing curiosity, creativity and great determination in their learning. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to.

Maths

This week in Maths, we have been developing our understanding of division. The children practised dividing numbers by 10 and 100, building on their place value knowledge and recognising how digits move when dividing by powers of ten.

We then moved on to the bus stop method, using it to solve division problems with increasing confidence and accuracy. The children have done brilliantly in remembering the steps and applying their times table knowledge to help them divide larger numbers.

Here we are using counters to learn about the link between sharing, grouping and the bus stop method.

Next week, we will be turning our attention to time. We’ll be exploring analogue and digital clocks, learning how to tell and compare different times of the day. If you have a chance at home, please encourage your child to practise reading clocks around the house – it’s a great real-world skill!

English

In English, we began working on our exciting new information text about robots. The children explored the key features of non-fiction writing, including using titles, subheadings, pictures with captions, and writing in clear, factual sentences.

We have also focused on creating complex and compound sentences to make our writing more interesting and detailed. It’s been wonderful to see so many children using a range of conjunctions to extend their ideas.

Next week, we will continue our robot information texts, learning how to use commas in a list and cause-and-effect conjunctions to show relationships between ideas. We can’t wait to see the finished pieces!

Thematic

In our Thematic lessons, we’ve been exploring the world of science and discovery. The children learned about two famous scientists — Heinrich Hertz and Ernest Mach — and discussed how their work has shaped the world we live in today. They were fascinated to learn how Hertz’s discoveries helped lead to the invention of modern wireless communication, and how Mach’s work influenced physics and sound studies.

Next week, our focus will shift to RE, where we’ll begin exploring Sikhism.

LOVE TO LEARN

This week, we would like you to practice the bus stop method from this week.

816 ÷ 8 =

324 ÷ 3 =

672 ÷ 6 =

945 ÷ 5 =

528 ÷ 4 =

732 ÷ 6 =

864 ÷ 8 =

This week's spellings will stay the same as last week, practising words with the prefix auto.

Other News

Digital leaders

Chilton are looking to recruit 6 children from year 4 to join the digital leaders team. In this role, your child will become an expert in staying safe online. They will support other children in school to do this by leading assemblies and workshops amongst other things. If your child would like to become a digital leader, we ask that they make a short video introducing themselves and why they think they would make a good digital leader. We ask that you send the video to Mrs Cheshire at hannah.cheshire@chiltonprimary.co.uk by Friday 17th October. We will announce who will be joining the team on Friday 31st October. Good luck to all the children.

Here is what we have been up to…

Maths

In maths this week, we have been learning to multiply. A key word that we learnt this week was the word ‘product’. In a multiplication calculation, the answer is called the product, so the product of 5 and 4 is 20. We began by multiplying by 10 or 100, and learnt that, although we know the sneaky way of just adding a 0 or two 0s, what we are actually doing is making the number 10 or 100 times bigger and the digits move 1 or 2 place value columns to the left. We practised this using some place value sliders.

We then moved on to learning how to multiply a 3 digit number by a 1 digit number using short multiplication e.g. 362 X 5 =. We also call this column multiplication as we write the calculation out in columns. See the picture below for an example. The children who have not quite learnt all of their times tables yet, used a multiplication square to help them with this.

Next week we will be learning to divide. The children will be using their known multiplication facts to work out missing numbers in division calculations e.g. 42 ÷ ? = 6.

English

In English this week we have continued reading ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. The children are enjoying the story and it has given us some excellent prompts for writing character descriptions. We have been learning some more skills needed to write a good character description this week. We have learnt to use superlatives to describe characters, such as bravest, cleverest, most powerful, tallest, most courageous. We have also learnt that we should start sentences with fronted adverbials and try not to use boring sentence openers such as he, she, the or the character’s name. Some fronted adverbials that we used were; Without warning, Menacingly, Loudly, On the top of her head, In the blink of an eye, In her hand.

Next week, we will be finding out about real life robots and write an information text about them.

Thematic

In science this week, we have been learning more about hearing. We have learnt about noise pollution, about how we can protect our ears and about how people communicate who have hearing loss or are deaf. We made ear defenders and learnt that a material that slows sound down is called an insulator. We used paper and tissue paper as an insulator in our ear defenders. The children learnt about hearing aids and cochlea implants. Here we are wearing our home-made ear defenders. Some of us made a strap around our chin too to keep the ear cups tight on our ears!

Next week, we will be learning about some famous scientists from the past who made some important discoveries to do with sound.

Spellings

This week’s spellings are words that begin with the prefix auto-. These are the spellings to learn for a test on Thursday:

autopilot, autograph, autocue, automobile, automatic, consider, decide, continue

Challenge words (optional to learn): autobiography, autobiographies

Love to Learn

This week’s task is an English one.

We would like you to choose some of these fronted adverbials and write sentences that start with them. We would like at least 5 sentences, but you can write more than 5 if you wish. Your sentences could be about anything you like, but with Halloween coming up, you can make them spooky if you wish! Don’t forget to put the comma after the fronted adverbial and remember your capital letters and full stops!

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning to add using the column method. The children have learnt to solve calculations that involve regrouping in all columns e.g. 4837 + 3294 =. The children have been incredibly skilled at this and have blown Mr Cook and Mrs Cousins away with how accurate they are with this method. They used the column method to solve problems and answer reasoning questions, and they also identified mistakes in column method calculations, using their mathematical language to explain the mistakes in sentences.

Next week, we will be learning to subtract using the column method and solving 2 step problems involving addition and subtraction.

English

In English this week we have been learning to write recounts. These recount events and are written in past tense and usually first person such as letters, postcards and diary entries. We have learnt to use time conjunctions as sentence openers to show the chronology of the events we recount such as;

First of all, ... The next day,... Later that afternoon, ... One evening,..

We then learnt that a good recount should use emotive language and the children really enjoyed showing opposing viewpoints of 2 of the characters in Gregory Cool. We also learnt to use compound sentences in a recount using FANBOYS co-ordinating conjunctions (for, and, but, or, yet, so).

Next week we will begin reading our next text called The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, and we will be learning to write character descriptions.

Thematic

In thematic we have continued with our science learning in our theme 'Make some noise'. First of all, we learnt about volume. We found out that sound travels in waves and that if a sound wave has a lot of energy, it will create a loud sound and if it has a small amount of energy, the wave will be smaller and the sound will be soft/quiet. We also learnt about pitch and found out that high pitch sounds are made when an object vibrates quickly and the sound wave will have waves very close together. Low pitch sounds are created when an objects vibrates more slowly and the waves are more spread out. We made mini panpipes using straws to investigate which straw would make the highest pitch sound and which the lowest pitch sound. We finished off the week planning an experiment that we will conduct on Tuesday. If we drop an object from different heights, will the sound when it hits the floor gets louder and fainter the higher we drop it?

Here we are making our panpipes...

Spellings to learn for a test on Thursday:

disable, disagree, disappear, dislike, disability, dislodge, dishonest, disobey, calendar, caught, centre

Challenge words (optional to learn): disqualify, disassemble

Love to Learn

Maths

This week in maths, we have been continuing our number and place value skills. We have looked at the value of the numbers in different columns. For example, if a 6 is in the hundreds column it is worth 600. We also worked on finding 1,10,100 and 1000 more and less than any given number. Finishing the week by comparing and ordering up to 5-digit numbers.

Next week we will be moving on to adding 4-digit numbers with regrouping.

English

In English this week we have continued our book Gregory Cool and continued or work on setting descriptions. However, this week we moved onto using skills such as adverbs for fronted adverbials, prepositions and similes in our writing. We finished the week by doing a showpiece to show all the skills we have learnt over the last few weeks.

Next week, we are going to be focusing on writing in role as different characters from the book.

Thematic

To begin our Thematic learning for Year 4 we started our first unit called ‘Make some Noise’. This unit focusses on science and we have been learning about how sounds are made through vibrations and how volume changes when the distance is increased. We completed two of our own investigations to prove this.

Next week we will be looking at how sound travels and the different pitches sounds are.

Spellings

This week’s spellings are words that begin with the prefix un-.

unwrap, unable, untidy, uncertain, unlucky, unhealthy, unusual, unpopular, uncomfortable and unofficial

Love to Learn

Linked to our science learning this week, you are encouraged to create a piece of work related to how sounds are made. It could be pictures of an investigation, a piece of writing, a poster or you could make something. It is up to you how you show how a sound can be made.

Welcome to Year 4! Team Aqua and Team Topaz have had an amazing week; you wouldn’t believe it is the first week of term! They have been completing some incredible learning and have really impressed us! Here is what we have been up to this week…

Maths

We have kicked off maths in year 4 by learning about number and place value. We have learnt to read and write numbers up to 1000 and beyond in words and in digits. We have been representing numbers using place value counters and diennes (also called base ten). Here we are using the diennes blocks…

We also estimated missing numbers on numbers lines up to 10,000. We started off with number lines where all the numbered intervals were labelled and then we tried some trickier number lines where none of the intervals are labelled in between the start and end point. The children did amazingly well and showed us that their understanding of number is excellent! We finished off the week by partitioning 4 digit numbers e.g. knowing that 3824 is 3000 + 800 + 20 + 4.

Next week we will continue to learn about number, and we will be comparing and ordering numbers up to 100 and beyond.

English

In English this week we have begun reading our first text of Year 4 called ‘Gregory Cool’. This is a short picture book about a young boy who travels to Tobago for the first time without his parents to stay with his Granny and Grandpa. The beautiful illustrations have given us the perfect opportunity to learn how to describe settings in a story. So far this week the children have found out that to write a good setting description you need to use expanded noun phrases and verbs and adverbs. An expanded noun phrase is using adjectives to expand the noun. For example, the dry, dusty ground, the loud, chirping crickets. We tried really hard to try to remember to use commas in between our adjectives in our expanded noun phrases. We used verbs and adverbs to describe another setting of the story, and the children thought of some excellent, ambitious words to use, for example, lizards scuttling frantically, the sun beaming powerfully.

Next week, we will finish reading Gregory Cool and learn how to write recounts including diary entries.

PSHE

In the afternoons this week the children have taken part in lots of PSHE activities based around our school motto, ‘One childhood, one chance’. We have been learning about our school values; equality, respect, kindness and courage’ and our school rules; be ready, be respectful, be safe.

Next week we will begin our first thematic unit this year called ‘Make some Noise!’ which is a science based unit where we will learn all about sound.

Spellings

This week’s spellings are words that begin with the prefix in-. There will also be a few red words to learn each week. These are the spellings to learn for a test on Thursday:

invisible, incorrect, inhuman, incapable, incomplete, independent, although, address, accident

Challenge words (optional to learn): inconvenient, inexpensive

Love to Learn

The children will bring home their new Love to Learn book today. Their first task is to decorate their book and write their name on the front.
