The Viking Speaker Competition

Dear Chilton Families,

It is that time of year again that we will be holding the Viking Speaker Competition. The Speaker competition is an annual competition across the Viking Academy Trust that helps to develop children's Oracy skills. The children are invited to create and present a speech on a given theme. Four children will be chosen to represent the school, competing against children from Ramsgate Arts and Upton to become the Viking Speaker winner for 2026.

This year the children are invited to ‘Pitch their passion’. The idea is the children choose something they are passionate about. This could be anything from Climate Change to Capybaras; it may be a hobby they have or just something they find interesting. They need to write a speech that inspires the audience to take an interest in their chosen passion. The speech can be no longer that 2 minutes and the children cannot use any props or slides to help them during their speech.

To help the children with this competition, please could you support your child across half term to decide which passion they have that they might wish to ‘pitch’ in their speech. They need to consider what makes their passion so intriguing and why others should also take an interest in it. They can begin to make some notes or even create a first draft of their speech. They will then continue to work on their speech during the first week back in school after half term.

Those children that wish to enter the competition will perform their speech to their class during the week beginning 2nd March. Each class will choose one representative. We will then hold the Chilton Speaker Final on Friday 13th March, where our four Chilton representatives will be chosen. These four children will take part in the Viking Speaker Final on Friday 27th March.

We look forward to learning all about what our children are passionate about.

Maths

The children took part in practical maths this week as part of our NSPCC Number Day. We started the week buying items from a shop (the children were given a fictional budget of £20 in Mr Wheeler's supermarket and £20 in Mrs Rowland-Hill's bookshop. The children played the Game of Life in Mrs Bax's room too. The children were also tasked with furnishing their own bedroom on a budget of £500. They used the Argos website to work within their budget! The children ended the week using Skittles to answer multiple questions linked to number, ratio, fractions and decimals. Next week, the children will learn how to answer calculations using Order of Operations (BIDMAS) and sequencing numbers. Here is BIDMAS explained: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opmBUyg9dJ0

We hope you have a wonderful half term break. School resumes Tuesday 28th October.

The children enjoyed their reward for reaching 100 AR quizzes. There has been a lot of reading and quizzing so well done! Remember, the expectation is 10 minutes a day for at least 4 times a week.

On Friday, we also visited Discovery Park where we got to see inside working laboratories. In this time, we were able to ask questions to scientists who told us about their work with yeast and bacteria (which linked to this term's learning). As well as this, we were able to take part in interactive sessions which were lots of fun (including making your own catapult!)

English

In English this week, we read more of our fun text, 'Floodland'. We retrieved information through comprehension tasks and wrote using verbs and adverbs as sentence openers. In this way, ambitious vocabulary focuses on action: the children thought considered the language to depict a fight between two characters. As we read on, we painted a battle scene using red paint for blood. It was really gory!

Maths

The children have worked further on division, this week focusing on remainders. At the start of the week, the children expressed their remainders as whole numbers or decimals before solving problems where they had to interpret the remainders. To further challenge children, they reasoned to help them apply their understanding.

Thematic

We have enjoyed learning about Hinduism during our RE Week. After listening to and reading stories from Hindu culture, the children acted them out. This helped them have a better grasp of the story. The children understood that Brahma can take on many forms, including Krishna, who shared his character through stories. The children also summarised the story of Rama and Sita and considered how Rama showed forgiveness to the Demon King. They discussed why Hindus value truth (Satya) and talked through different scenarios, explaining what they would do in each.

On Wednesday 29th October, please come to school with the lyrics to your favourite song. We have a fun activity planned on this day. You can write them out or simply print them. Obviously, the lyrics need to be clean and be ready to share them to the class.

English

This week, we have read more of Floodland. As we have been introduced to more characters, we used dialogue as a way to show characterisation and understand what they are like. We also weaved action into our writing and used drama as a way to better understand the characters. Next week, we will be writing a non-chronological report on Climate Change, which is linked to our text.

Maths

We have enjoyed challenging ourselves with square and cube numbers. As well as this, we worked to understand division using a suitable method. Next week, we will move on to division with remainders.

Thematic

We thoroughly loved learning about Inheritance. The children asked lots of questions and worked together to consider whether characteristics are inherited, environmental or both. For example, eye colour is inherited from our parents; scars are environmental (from an accident for example); height could be both inherited or dependent on the nutrients we take in. We also had fun classifying animals in our own way using a tree diagram that we were introduced to last week.

English

This week, we read the first few chapters of Floodland, clarifying the mysterious opening and making predictions or asking ourselves questions. On a map, we located Norwich and asked why the sea could be rising. We wrote a setting description of Eels Island and drew the scene, trying to add to the dark imagery the text was creating. Next week, we will be characterising using dialogue and action, including drama.

Maths

In Maths, we were wrapping our heads around multiplying using the column method. We discussed vocabulary linked to multiplication and challenged ourselves with TO x TO and HTO x TO as well as applying the skill to problem solving activities. We also began to find clever ways to multiply decimals. Next week, we will be learning how to divide using an appropriate method.

Thematic

Whilst learning more about the importance of Darwin's discovery on the Galapagos Islands, we classified living things including animals, plants and fungi. We even completed our own surveys of the types of plants that are at Chilton before creating a graph to highlight our findings. By using a tree diagram, we could ask specific questions to help classify the living things around us. We began to understand what a fossil is (it is rock!) and we even made our own using plaster of Paris. Next week, we will be thinking about what makes things living and describe the life cycles of a range of animals and plants.

Harvest Festival for Years 5 and 6 will be Friday 10th October at 2:45pm. Parents are welcome to join.

Maths

We worked hard to understand the column method for subtraction, applying the fact that subtraction is not commutative (i.e.: 8 -7 is not the same as 7-8). We have been challenged to use these skills to solve word problems and played subtraction games with our friends. We even created our own fun games to play!

English

The children have read the first part of our new text, 'Floodland' and have asked many questions about its mysterious opening. From this, we wrote emotive letters from Zoe to Natasha, explaining why she abandoned her. We used model verbs to express the likelihood: 'Natasha, I would do anything to save you, you ought to know.' To help us understand the character, we also had a Conscience Corridor where the children lined up and whispered whether it was right or wrong to leave Natasha behind as the teacher walked through. After reading the first chapter, we created lino print-style drawings in the same style as the illustrator. Next week, we will be creating a setting description of Eels Island and weaving action and dialogue into a narrative.

Thematic

We have been thoroughly enjoying our topic of 'Darwin's Delights' and have asked many questions about evolution. The children created their own animals based on a chosen biome and described how that creature had adapted to suit its environment, much like Darwin said living things do. We began to understand what a fossil is and created a record for what could happen when animals and plants die. In art, we observationally drew bones that we have borrowed from the Cotton-Powell museum. Next week, we will be classifying animals and plants.

Love 2 Learn

Prior to our learning of classifying plants, we would like you to find out about the plants, trees and flowers in your garden (or local park or green). You could do a graph or tally to show the number of each species, draw pictures / include photographs or group the plants into your own categories.

Maths

In Maths, we played a fun game involving a hot air balloon to help us understand adding and subtracting negative numbers. Positive numbers are puffs of air and negative numbers are sandbags. If you add a positive number (a puff of air), the balloon goes up; subtracting a positive number will deflate the balloon so it will descend. When adding a negative number (sandbag), the balloon gets heavier so will go down. Subtracting negative numbers will make the balloon rise. For example, 8 + -3 = 5 (8 add 3 sandbags makes the number decrease). Here is a video to help you remember how to play:

We also reminded ourselves of how to add using the column method, lining the digits up like buttons on a shirt. We used base ten and dice to help demonstrate this and rehearsed the strategy. Next week, the children will be finding efficient ways to subtract.

English

The children thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Way Home'. We wrote in role as Shane, who is homeless, using subject specific vocabulary. We gathered language and considered how people who are homeless may feel. Children showed empathy for those less well off than us. We also wrote a setting description for a bustling city using descriptive language. Next week, we will be introducing our new text, 'Floodland'.

Thematic

Using atlases, maps and globes, the children enjoyed locating the lines of longitude and latitude on a map, including the Equator, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and the Prime Meridian. We tracked the route of Charles Darwin on his journey to the Galapagos. Next week, we will be classifying living things by using an appropriate system as well as classifying plants, going out to the forest school to see what plants are in our local area.

Love to Learn

Using the receipt from your family's 'big shop', please add up ten items using the column method. Find a suitable way to present this. Here is a receipt if you cannot have access to one:

We would also like you to practise these words, which we have learned about this week. We learned about the different spelling rules when adding the suffix 'ed'. A challenge could be to explain each spelling rule:

We are looking for candidates who:

Show excellent behaviour

Care deeply about others

Have good attendance

Want to make a positive difference to our school

If you would like to apply, please write a letter to Mrs Winchcombe, explaining why you would make the perfect Thrive Ambassador - Please hand these into your teachers, who will pass them on to her.

Deadline: Friday 19th September

Good luck – we can’t wait to hear from you!

Maths

In Maths this week, the children were challenged to round numbers up to 10,000,000, including with decimals. We identified the column that we needed to round before underlining the digit to the right of that column. By following the rhyme '0, 1, 2, 3, 4... round it down to the floor / 5, 6, 7, 8, 9... round it up to the washing line', we were about to round a variety of numbers and solve problems based on this. After the Kent Test (and continuing into next week), we were introduced to negative numbers. We played a fun game involving a hot air balloon that helped us to understand adding and subtracting with negative numbers. Here is the link: Balloon Game

English

After completing 'Way Home', we discussed its theme of homelessness and considered the causes, effects and solutions to the issue. From this, we wrote a non-chronological report about homelessness, using a formal tone. Next week, we will be writing in role as the main character (Shane) and creating art based on a cityscape.

Thematic

The children discussed the Big Question in our new topic of Darwin's Delights: Is Change Good? We used a Consensus Circle activity to decide whether we agreed with each other or not. After this, we researched three explorers and had a treasure hunt-style activity on the playground to locate clues about each person. On Friday, we created a timeline of Charles Darwin's life.

Love 2 Learn

We would like everyone to plan and rehearse a short speech that they will present to the year group that outlines which responsibilities they would like this year. Roles that will be available this year will include House Captains, Play Leaders, Sports Captain, Sports Crew, Peer Mediators, Librarians and Maths Ambassador. We understand that this may take some out of their comfort zones however this is an opportunity to gain confidence in a safe space and to really sell themselves! Next Friday afternoon, everyone will have a chance to present to the Year 6 teachers and children.

Maths

In Maths this week, we looked at the place value of a range of numbers, up to ten million. Additionally, we explored the resources that are used to support our learning. We wrote, said and read the numbers and partitioned them in a range of ways. Next week, we will be rounding numbers, finding strategies to round larger numbers in different ways. We will also see how negative numbers get smaller the further from zero you go.
