One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 31/01/25

English

This week, the children watched a short film clip called ‘Alma’ about a little girl, who was drawn into an eerie shop because she saw a doll that looked identical to her. The children spent the week planning and writing a narrative that created suspense. They also included relative clauses and pathetic fallacy in their writing.

Maths

This week, we have been finding percentages of amounts. We find 10% by dividing by 10, 1% by dividing by 100. We can also find 50% and 25% using our knowledge of fractions. We then used these facts to find other amounts e.g

 35% of 40 – we find 10% which is 4

multiply it by 3 to get 12.

We then half 10% to get 5% which is 2

Then add them together so, 35% of 40 is 14

Thematic

In the afternoon this week, we spent time learning more about the human body: we made a model of blood using marshmallows to represent white blood cells and yellow food colouring to represent plasma. We also started to think about nutrition – why we eat certain food types and seasonal foods.

Art

This week we continued learning more about the various quilling techniques.  We started to complete our own quilling of a Maori symbol, that will be used for a display.

French

We have reviewed months in French and are able to say when our birthday is.

Home learning task:

  1. Spelling.  Please can the children learn the following spellings for a spelling test on Friday 7th February comfortable, tolerable, achievable, noticeable, reliable, legible, edible, visible, sensible, possible, irresistible

  1. We would like the children to make something for display showing their understanding of seasonal foods in Britain. They can do this any way they wish – they may even like to bake something and take photos
