Weekly News! 6.6.25

My goodness! What a super start to Term 6! The children have jumped straight back into their learning, and it has been delightful to witness how they are embracing the challenges of our final term in Year 2. Let’s take a look at some of their amazing learning from the week!
English
We’ve started exploring 'Grace and Family' by Mary Hoffman, and it’s been a great adventure! The children have really got into it, getting to know the different characters and thinking about the feelings they go through on their journey. We’ve had some fun asking questions about these characters and even did a hot-seating activity, where a few of the children pretended to be the characters. It was a brilliant way to understand them better!
We also took a look at the market setting in the story. Working together, the class created and labelled our own market! This was a fantastic way for them to practise using adjectives, and they turned those labels into sentences, too. It’s lovely to see their writing skills developing!
To wrap up the week, the children wrote a diary entry from Grace’s point of view. This really encouraged them to be creative and think about the story from her perspective.
As we continue our journey with this book, I’d love for you to chat about it at home. Asking your child about the characters or the setting can be a great way to keep the excitement alive and help them relate to the story.
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319
For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader
Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
We have immersed ourselves in the exciting world of measurement, and I must say, the children have been absolutely fantastic! We kicked off the week by exploring the concept of temperature. The children have learnt how to use thermometers and have grasped how to read scales that increase in intervals of 2s, 5s, and 10s. It has been wonderful to see them engage with the topic, particularly as they discovered how mercury rises or falls depending on whether it comes into contact with something hot or cold. They even took on the challenge of comparing different temperatures and calculating the differences, which sparked some lively discussions in class!
We have now started our journey into learning about time, and I’m thrilled to say that we will continue this exploration next week. Understanding time is such a crucial skill, and we encourage you to engage your children in everyday conversations about this topic.
PSHE
We began the week by reading the story 'Taste Your Words'. This engaging narrative opened up important discussions about the impact of unkind words and how they can affect the feelings of those around us. The children were thoughtful as they described their feelings in response to the idea of hurtful words, with many expressing how such words might make their tummies feel funny or cause worries in their minds.
To further explore the concept of kindness, we created our own "kindness pizzas" in class. Each child contributed their own compliments and positive words to top their pizzas, representing how kindness can be spread through our words and actions.
As the week progressed, we engaged in various scenarios that allowed the children to consider different perspectives and the feelings that might arise from specific situations. This has been a valuable opportunity for them to reflect on empathy and understanding.
Love To Learn
Next Thursday is Year 2s class assembly. If your child has a speaking part, we would like you to take the time this week to practice their lines. All children will need to practice the song ‘Ugly’ by the Sugababes ready for our performance.
